A variety of tools
A tool was a device that provided a mechanical advantage in accomplishing a task or enabled the accomplishment of a task not otherwise possible. A wielder of a tool was called an artisan. (TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais?")
Captain Jonathan Archer explained to the Novans Jamin and Nadet that his "Sky Ship" had tools which could help them to find out what happened on Terra Nova. Doctor Phlox cited his medical scanner as such a tool because it could tell him that Nadet was sick. (ENT: "Terra Nova")
People were sometimes used as tools, occasionally against their will or without their knowledge. In 2266, Lenore Karidian lamented that Captain James T. Kirk used her as a tool against her father, Anton Karidian. (TOS: "The Conscience of the King")
