Maab was a Capellan warrior and rival to High Teer Akaar, leader of the Ten Tribes of Capella IV.
Maab greeted the landing party from the USS Enterprise during their visit to Capella in 2267, hoping to acquire a mining treaty in exchange for the rights to the planet's abundant supply of topaline. Unknown at the time, he was secretly in league with a Klingon agent named Kras, who also had alleged interest in topaline rights as well. Within hours of the Enterprise's arrival, Maab executed a coup d'état by challenge, and assumed the title of Teer after assassinating Akaar. It was with this take over, Kras assumed he had secured the mining rights, as was previously arranged between the Klingon and Maab, but after becoming Teer, Maab began to take interest in Kirk.
In addition to his succession, he was prepared to kill the late Akaar's wife, Eleen, who was about to give birth to his heir – and she was prepared to die. Startled by this planned murder, Kirk interfered, which resulted in the imprisonment of Eleen and the landing party. Kirk and Spock overpowered their guards, and escaped to the nearby foothills with McCoy and Eleen.
Maab set off in pursuit, and eventually caught up to the landing party. Eleen reappeared; she had given birth, and she told Maab that she'd murdered the baby and the Enterprise crew. Maab seemed prepared to accept this, despite having learned moments earlier from his lieutenant Keel that the Enterprise party was hiding in the rocks within the mouth of the chasm. But Kras insisted on proof, committing a serious social blunder by doubting Eleen's word. He raced towards the mouth of the canyon, and held off the Capellans with a stolen phaser. Ultimately, Maab sacrificed his own life in order to distract Kras long enough for Keel to kill the Klingon. (TOS: "Friday's Child")
In 2381, a framed photograph of Maab and Duur was among several others displayed on the walls of a bar on Starbase 25. (LD: "An Embarrassment Of Dooplers")
Maab was played by actor Michael Dante.
In the final revised draft of the script, dated 11 May 1967, Maab is described "as tall and huge as the tape records just seen in the Enterprise Briefing Room. Although middle forties, he's as tough as a leather quirt."
The first draft of the script, dated 20 April 1967, had originally established Maab as the brother of Akaar.
