The Kaplan F17 Speed Freighter was a type of civilian starship used in the late 24th century.
An advertisement for The Red Bolian claimed that nobody knew their way around a Kaplan F17 Speed Freighter like they did. (PIC: "Stardust City Rag")
Technical data[]
The Kaplan F17 was slower, but more maneuverable, than a 23rd century Romulan Bird-of-Prey. The ship was equipped with deflector shields and phasers, and came with an Emergency Hologram basic installation, allowing it to be operated by a single individual.
The ship could operate with a power conversion efficiency as low as 91%. (PIC: "Stardust City Rag")
The ship was designed with landing gear, allowing it to land on planets and moons. (PIC: "Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2")
Interior design[]
The ship's interior featured a large, open main deck, with the bridge at the front and a transporter pad at the rear. To the sides were crew staterooms and a holomatrix (which could serve as a stateroom). The vessel was also equipped with a science lab and a sickbay on the lower level, though it was somewhat cramped, as well as a dining area with replicators. Background information[]
Production designer Todd Cherniawsky noted in "La Sirena Set Tour" that the ship was designed to be non-Federation, and accumulated Federation components (such as the staterooms and holodeck) over Rios' time as captain. (TRR: "Away Mission Special")
According to Issue #1 of the Star Trek Universe: The Official Starships Collection, the Kaplan F17 was introduced into service in the 23rd century and was 85.57 meters in length. Its length was corroborated by Dave Blass as the corresponding length of the Kaplan F17 Patrol Frigate, which was listed as 281 ft (85.6 meters). [1](X)
