John Mason worked as producer with Burton Armus and Mike Gray on the first thirteen episodes of the second season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Together with Mike Gray he also wrote the episode "Unnatural Selection". His name appeared in an Okudagram reference, where he was listed as a noted comedian in the episode "The Outrageous Okona".

Mason started his career as sound mixer and editor in the late 1960s and worked with Mike Gray on the documentaries American Revolution 2 (1969), 8 Flags/99¢ (1970), The Murder of Fred Hampton (1971), The Gift: Four Seasons Mosaic of Marc Chagall (1974), and The Rocket Pilots (1981), and The Final Terror (1983, with Mark Metcalf and special effects by Kenny Myers).

Mason received no credit for his work as writer on Code of Silence (1985, with Bert Remsen, Mike Genovese, and Molly Hagan). He also wrote with Mike Gray for Starman which featured Michael Cavanaugh as a regular and helped produce the series.

His most recent known work was that of an editor on the news series Atmospheres in 2000.
