An ironclad was a type of 19th century steamship, best described as a warship clad with iron-plated hull armor.

This type of vessel was predominantly used on Earth during the American Civil War by both the Union and Confederate Armies. Vessels of this type were predominantly featured in the 1860s Battle of Hampton Roads and Battle of Fort Hindman.

Images depicting several ironclads of this era were scanned by the Talosians, while they downloaded the USS Enterprise's library computer in 2254. (TOS: "The Cage" and TOS-R: "The Cage")

Background information[]

The ironclad USS Monitor was later referenced by Abraham Lincoln in what was a deleted scene from "The Savage Curtain". In this scene, Lincoln, who was amazed at the wonders of the Enterprise stated, "We thought our Monitor the most formidable vessel imaginable. An iron ship that floated on water! You can imagine my amazement at an iron ship that floats on air..." [1]
