A hat (or cap) was perhaps the most common type of gear worn on an individual's head. Typically, they possessed a visor or brim extended from the front of the hat so as to protect a person's eyes and head from the elements. They could also be a part of casual wear or be worn with a religious background. Hats sometimes had a design on their front, such as words or an image.
Several women wore hats as clothing accessories. Guinan also wore a variety of unique hats. (TNG: "The Big Goodbye", "We'll Always Have Paris", Star Trek: The Next Generation)
Tom Paris wore a hat to cover the haircuts his father forced him to get every summer. B'Elanna Torres tried to hide her cranial ridges under hats and scarves. (VOY: "Faces")
Spacedock prison guards in the United Federation of Planets wore white Starfleet issued caps, along with their blue-gray uniforms and white utility belts. (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock)
When Caylem made a comedic performance to divert the Mokra Order soldiers in 2372, Augris placed a fruit on his head like a hat. (VOY: "Resistance")
