Background information[]
This planet's quadrant of origin is inferred based on the position of its star system as seen in the star chart appearing in the Star Trek: Picard episode "Maps and Legends". The sector where this system was located was mentioned in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Amok Time".
"AL-tair" was the pronunciation for this planet's name from the script pronunciation guide for "Prophet Motive". [1]
Altair IV was referred to in the first draft script of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, which established it as the place of origin of Altair water. The script also referred to it as "far away" from Earth.
The Star Trek Encyclopedia, 3rd ed., p. 9 noted that planet Altair IV was also the setting for the 1956 science fiction film Forbidden Planet.
In Gene Roddenberry and D.C. Fontana's final draft script of the Star Trek: The Next Generation first season episode "Encounter at Farpoint", this planet was visited by the USS Hood. This was changed to Altair III for the aired episode.
For the Star Trek: Prodigy episode "Let Sleeping Borg Lie", UI graphic designer Dominique Rossier created an info panel for the USS Dauntless mess hall depicting depicted the Milky Way Galaxy with planet and Starfleet space station locations labeled. Identified as a planet, Altair IV was one of the locations mentioned on the chart. Although the panel did not appear in the episode, it can be seen at Rossier's artist page at Art Station. [2]
Apocrypha[]
In the novel Beneath the Raptor's Wing, an Earth colony had been settled on Altair IV, and narrowly avoided destruction by Romulan weapons.
