DYK for Cheese and crackers

On 14 August 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Cheese and crackers, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that cheese and crackers has been described as one of the first fast foods in the United States? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Cheese and crackers. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Cheese and crackers), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

As soon as I saw cheese and crackers on the Main Page I knew without even checking that it had to be one of yours... Nicely done. Yunshui  12:03, 14 August 2017 (UTC)
Hi Yunshui: Thanks; it's a start. I was somewhat surprised that said article did not previously exist before I created it. North America1000 21:02, 14 August 2017 (UTC)

Help is needed

Hello. Thank you for your contribution in Articles for deletion/Abdullah Al-Salloum. You have relisted the project for a more thorough discussion. I was waiting for a week for someone else's opinion on the AfD's main concern "Lack of evidence of notability in English" as got no response even from the project's author. The questions are:

  • Was it a valid and disputable concern? Do all cited references really have to be in English?
  • From my "Keep" vote, did I understand the concern clearly? If not, what does it clearly mean?
  • Can a project be relisted if initiated with an invalid or undisputable concern?

I really do love reading cases. I've gone through several AfD archives looking for similar cases and found nothing that could answer my questions. Your help is highly appreciated. :-) Thank you very much. --Aaehasa (talk) 20:02, 23 August 2017 (UTC)

  • Sources do not have to be in English. Check out WP:NOENG and WP:GNG, the latter of which states, "Sources do not have to be available online or written in English." However, the nomination is still essentially questioning the notability of the subject, although the "in English" part is flawed.
  • Your !vote is quite thorough, although you could add commentary regarding sources in the article relative to whether or not they are reliable and if they serve to establish notability for the subject, as per WP:BASIC, WP:GNG and/or WP:AUTHOR.
North America1000 20:45, 23 August 2017 (UTC)

Hello Northamerica1000, that answer is more than what I expected. Thanks! The commentary is a great idea, I'll be adding it shortly although my defense is already on Talk:Abdullah Al-Salloum. It has been very great COMMUNICATING with you, that was my first sufficient one. :--)) --Aaehasa (talk) 21:26, 23 August 2017 (UTC)

About AfD

Hello, Northamerica1000. I am somewhat in awe of all your contributions; thanks for being such a role model. I have a couple of AfD-related questions I wanted to ask your advice on.

First, am I... doing AfD correctly? I've been going through the oldest pages looking for ones that need attention (and sometimes finding myself sucked in on ones that have plenty of discussion happening already) but I read elsewhere recently that coming in at the end of AfD discussions looks bad (this was in the context of considering people's chances at RfA; I am not now nor do I anticipate ever running for adminship).

Second, I wonder if you'd give your opinion as to whether one of my draft articles is worth continuing to spend time on, or if you think it would be pointless to keep at it, i.e., if it's doomed to deletion. The draft is Draft:List of Camden Crawl performers and is a companion, naturally, to Camden Crawl (which I also created).

I would really appreciate your advice (and the advice of friendly talk page stalkers is also welcome). Thanks in advance, GrammarFascist contribstalk 00:00, 26 August 2017 (UTC)

Of course; I'm in no rush. Thanks for letting me know. —GrammarFascist contribstalk 17:46, 26 August 2017 (UTC)
Hi GrammarFascist: I don't think the parameters you provided above correspond with performing at AfD correctly or incorrectly. Sometimes AfD discussions seriously lack user input, so contributing is a good thing. I have seen users perform "incorrectly" in various AfD discussions in terms of not providing guideline- or policy-based rationales in discussions, bickering with other users rather than addressing article content, etc. I don't see a problem with you contributing to AfD discussions that are nearing their end.
Regarding Draft:List of Camden Crawl performers, it could be a useful supplement article to the main Camden Crawl article. It's possible that someone may come along and deem the article inappropriate as per WP:NOTDIR, but this also may not occur, and the list is well-sourced. Rather than leaving it in draft namespace forever, I think you should publish it to main namespace and add a link to the main article to the list of performers article. North America1000 01:41, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
Hi again NorthAmerica1000. Thank you for a prompt (I consider anything less than 24 hours prompt for such non-urgent questions) and thoughtful response to my questions. Thank you also for the reassurance that I'm doing things right, on both counts. The article in question is my first list article, and I know lists are often considered cruft-y and unencyclopedic, but I haven't been involved in enough list-article AfDs to get a handle on where the line is. I won't let it languish in draftspace forever; the main reason it's been there so long is that I took a long hiatus from Wikipedia, and only recently returned. It won't take me too long to finish collating the remaining entries, provided I work on the draft, and then I'll move it to mainspace; I'd rather not do that with the most recent years undone. Thanks again, and see you around AfD! —GrammarFascist contribstalk 02:00, 27 August 2017 (UTC)

The letter ae and hah goal are duplicate to hah. I am designing Highway Gothic font to be a Unicode typeface

You can't design an Arabic font on the basis of a code chart! You have to understand what language each letter is intended for, and how its shaping behaviour works. In the case of "hah" and "hah goal" (latter used for Urdu), the two characters may look alike in isolation in the Wikipedia code chart (but they don't in the official Unicode code chart), but they have different glyph forms in some positions, so are encoded separately. You need to study the Unicode Standard and associated data files in order to understand the details of how the Arabic script works in Unicode; and if you still have questions then ask on the Unicode mailing list. Re: The Gong Show

Thanks for thinking of me! I'm glad the show is back too, and I think it's done a good job of keeping the spirit of the original about as much as a 2017 version could, in terms of the format and the quirky acts. Chuck Barris was one of a kind as a host so I appreciate them going for something totally different with Mike Myers. I'm impressed with ABC relaunching a bunch of old game shows (Match Game, Pyramid, To Tell the Truth) and doing them all pretty well! Take care,  gongshow  talk  05:54, 25 August 2017 (UTC)

  • @Gongshow: Yes, I also feel that the overall spirit of the show is aligned with its former version. Yep, I've seen some of those other shows you mention as well. Regarding a recent version of the new TGF, I saw what appears to be a relatively uncommon phenomenon, a tie result. It was between the Married with bananas skit that had people spitting/projecting banana chunks into one-another's mouths, and the Buddy Lee experience skit, which was essentially expert jump roping. I thought the latter should have won, but the former did per the judge tie-breaker. North America1000 09:12, 26 August 2017 (UTC)
  • I remember seeing this - the banana couple had a certain eccentric charm about them and they got the judges involved in the bit, but the jump roper had some serious talent! I agree that he deserved to win.  gongshow  talk  03:45, 27 August 2017 (UTC)

Yakisoba vs Lo Mein

Hello,

You were the last person to edit the "yakisoba noodle" Wikipedia page, and I had a question! I'm trying to order Chinese food, and this place offers both Lo Mein noodle dishes and Yakisoba noodle dishes. I know Lo Mein is Chinese, and Yakisoba is Japanese, but is there a difference in taste? I assumed there would be since the place offers both, but I need an experts opinion.

Help needed

Could you explain to HighKing why he is not allowed to !vote on an AfD he has nominated for AfD, per WP:AFDLIST? He doesn't seem to understand, and is also edit-warring on at least one AfD that he nominated (WP:Articles for deletion/TransUnion CIBIL) to retain his !vote. Thanks. Softlavender (talk) 16:38, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

Actually, your time might be better served explaining to Softlavender why her approach to templating experienced editors is deemed rude, why my nomination is not in breach of any policy or guideline, why it is verboten to change an editor's comments (especially if they tell you to stop) and why she should generally chill and stop attempting to browbeat/bully other editors over her (incorrect) interpretation of WP:AFDLIST. Especially when it was explained on my Talk page. -- HighKing++ 16:49, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
You can now add in 4 reverts to WP:Articles for deletion/TransUnion CIBIL. Another tactic whereby she "talks" to you on your Talk page but is essentially not really talking but laying down the law, lump it or like it, and pushing her edits through in a very disruptive manner. I'm not going to revert again, but note that she templated my Talk page after her 3rd revert but still went ahead and reverted again anyway. I'm not calling for a block - just pointing out the unacceptable behaviour of this editor. -- HighKing++ 16:52, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
She's not finished yet. Now this. -- HighKing++ 16:54, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
It's all right to have the word "delete" in bold in the nomination header. What WP:AFDFORMAT and WP:AFDLIST state is that the delete !vote in bold should not be repeated in a new comment, although commentary remains allowed. North America1000 23:55, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

Question

Hey, NA1000 - can you point me to the policy or guideline that addresses the listing of dates for upcoming concert tours, or perhaps a consensus or even an AfD that set a precedent for inclusion? I'm thinking it's pure marketing and promotion to list upcoming tour dates like you'd see at Stubhub or Ticket Master, and that only completed tours that pass WP:N are eligible for inclusion. It's looking more and more like WP has become a marketing tool for the sports, music and movie industries around the world. Atsme📞📧 02:13, 18 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi Atsme: Check out WP:NCONCERT for an overview. North America1000 15:38, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
Yep, I read it before I came here for advice. I'm concerned over what's happening because there is nothing explicit about lists with dates of upcoming concert tours rather the guideline addresses only notable tours that have already taken place and contain information such as box office take, attendance, etc. The former "upcoming" is where my concerns lie because it's promotion of the tour, not encyclopedic information about it. Inclusion of lists with the dates of upcoming concert tours are being based on inherent notability of the tour operators/musicians/bands rather than after the tour notability of the tour itself. See what I mean? Are we now accepting what WP:NOT specifically states we should not accept? A perfect example is PSA_Tour. I'm of the mind that it should probably be a G11 but it's still a learning process for me, and I want to feel confident that I'm doing it correctly. Atsme📞📧 16:36, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
Atsme: Sure, you could nominate PSA Tour for WP:G11, which may end up being deleted per this, or maybe not. Depends upon the reviewing admin's interpretation. Another option is to consider WP:PRODding the article, which provides a means to include a rationale for deletion. If the prod may be considered as controversial, then there's always AfD as well. North America1000 17:02, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
Thank you!! Your answer raised my confidence level up 2 notches! yes Atsme📞📧 17:10, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
Atsme: I entirely overlooked that the article is already at AFD... Facepalm. I must be getting used to seeing the template atop articles all the time... North America1000 17:45, 18 September 2017 (UTC)

Mastocarpus papillatus Linkrot

Can you be more specific concerning your assition of the linkrot template to Mastocarpus papillatus? I'm not sure which link(s) you may be referring. Other than http://www.iucnredlist.org/search for which that site does not allow parameters to be inserted into the URL, so there is no alternative that I can see.Nessie (talk) 16:10, 19 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi NessieVL: I added the tag while patrolling new AfC articles. Refs #3 and #4 have intermingled bare urls. North America1000 00:28, 20 September 2017 (UTC)
WP:BURL says that a bare URL has no other information other than the URL. Both of those references have authors, dates, publishers, etc. They are not in a citation template, but they don't need to be: "Note that some citation styles, such as the MLA style, use full bibliographic citation that happen to display the text of the URL in addition to proper identifying information, like the author, date, and title of the publication. These are not considered bare URLs." Nessie (talk) 15:30, 20 September 2017 (UTC)
Hi NessieVL: I see that the linkrot template was removed (diff). Per the above and WP:BURL, that's fine by me. North America1000 05:42, 22 September 2017 (UTC)
