It is located in the city of Versailles, Yvelines département, Île-de-France région, northern France, west-southwest of Paris. As the centre of the French court, Versailles was one of the grandest theatres of European absolutism.

The palace was built by King Louis XIV, who consolidated the power of the monarchy anointing himself "The Sun King", around who all others orbited. At the palace he fostered art and literature and was beloved as these things go and reigned absolute power for 72 years.[1]

When the French Revolution came King Louis XVI's people brought a new device to the palace for him to contemplate, "The Guillotine".[1]

20th century[]
