History
Early Life[]
Much of the early life of Nick Fury reflects that of his Earth-616 counterpart.
As a member of the Howling Commandos, Nick Fury fought in World War II, battling the Nazis on every shore, both on conventional battlefields and in mystical realms. When escaping a Nazi patrol in France Nick came across a mine field, and was grievously injured. He was rescued by partisans and taken to Dr. Berthold Sternberg, who tested his Infinity Formula on Nick, making him immortal. This came at a cost however, as Nick was required to regularly consume the formula, lest he begin rapidly aging. Sternberg began blackmailing Fury with the formula.[1]
A few years after the war, Fury was asked to head up America's spy agency S.H.I.E.L.D.. He befriended industrialist and scientist Tony Stark, who designed various gadgets for his use, including a flying car, the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier and a veritable army of Life-Model Decoys. His old friend Captain America would also resurface after years spent in suspended animation. [1]
For a time life was good for the old spy, but when the government began pushing Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. to tackle the "mutant epidemic", he began clashing with his superiors. Fury dismissed the brass' views that humanity needed to remain the dominant species, and viewed the mutants he was being asked to attack as American citizens deserving of freedom.[1]
Fury became increasingly disillusioned with S.H.I.E.L.D., but found himself distracted by other wars, such as the never-ending conflict with Hydra. It wasn't until the near-death of a rogue agent code-named Mockingbird that Fury realized how far gone his organization was. His investigations turned him against his fellow agents, and led to his being branded a traitor, forced to go on the run. He succeeded in destroying S.H.I.E.L.D. from within, and rebuilt it with certain safeguards in place. [1]
Mutation of Humanity[]
When a failed experiment intended to provide an unlimited power source for Earth coincided with the mutation of all of humanity, Fury believed that Reed Richards, an associate from World War II, was responsible, as did Reed himself. Fury remained unaware that the true culprit was King Black Bolt of the Inhumans. Due to the Infinity Formula, Fury escaped further mutation, and when the whereabouts of the missing Reed Richards were reported to him, Fury chose not to pursue him, believing that Reed had simply made a mistake while trying to help the world. [1]
In the wake of the mutation of mankind, and a subsequent food shortage, S.H.I.E.L.D. were called in to restore order, causing widespread disillusionment with the superhero establishment. When the alien parasites known as Hydra emerged and began subsuming heroes and civilians alike, the public rallied behind Norman Osborn. Fury would realize far too late that Osborn had in fact created Hydra, and orchestrated events to bring about the fall of the established order to pave the way for him to become president. Before Fury could warn Tony Stark, who had partnered with Osborn to fight the Hydra, the parasites attacked S.H.I.E.L.D., downing their Helicarrier. [1]
Nick Fury is presumed to have died in the crash, but with his death an army of his Life-Model Decoys were unleashed upon the world, some more stable than others, but each fighting old wars, many of which were long ended. Czar Colossus of Russia would find himself the frequent target of these LMD:s, operating on outdated Cold War programming. [1]
One LMD carried on where the real Fury had left off, torn about whether to reveal Osborn's plan and risk unleashing a new wave of civil unrest in a world without S.H.I.E.L.D. available to restore order. Before it could warn Stark and take the fight to Osborn, it learned of the Skull, a teenager with the power to force anyone to do his bidding. The LMD investigated him, finding a trail of bodies in his wake, and plotted to assassinate him during his march towards New York City. The LMD was easily dispatched, its decapitated head carried around on a pole, still regurgitating old monologues about long-ended wars. [1]
The soul of the real Nick Fury ended up in the Realm of the Dead, where he and his long dead friends and allies in both S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Howling Commandos' would team up with Captain Mar-Vell and his followers in their crusade to kill Death, a battle which Mar-Vell eventually won.
Following Death's death, Mar-Vell created a realm called Paradise where Nick Fury was offered the opportunity to live his most fondest dreams from consuming a shard of the Cosmic Cube. It is unknown what Fury's idea of an idealistic reality was, if he indeed did consume a shard of the Cube, however he was present during a counter offensive against an invading army of the Kree.Attributes
