Synopsis for "Yesterday and Beyond..."
As the Scarlet Witch continues her magical training with Agatha Harkness, the Avengers are just finishing their adventure in Limbo. There, Immortus has offered to reveal the mysterious pasts of both the Vision and Mantis. Sending the Vision through time on his own to learn his own origins, and the rest of the Avengers with Mantis to learn of her past.
While in the present, Moondragon is flying to Earth to answer the Avengers summons for Captain Marvel, and the hooded figure waiting in Vietnam with the spectral Swordsman is revealed to be the Zodiac member Libra.
The Vision travels back in time to the year 1939 and learns that he is the original Human Torch, an android invented by scientist Phineas T. Horton, who hoped to build an android to make a fast buck, however, when the android proved to burst into flames when exposed to air, it was locked away. However, the Torch would break free and eventually become a renowned superhero during the 1940s. The Vision learns of the Torch's capture in a pool by the criminal known as Sardo.
Meanwhile, the other Avengers are sent back millions of years and view early life on the home planet of the Kree, known as Hala where there were two alien races, the Kree and the plant-like Cotati that lived there. When the Skrulls came to Hala seeking partnership from the dominant race, they put the Kree and the Cotati in a test to see which race was more worthy to share the Skrulls technology. When the Cotati won, the Kree murdered all the Cotati they could find and the Skrull visitors. The Avengers bore witness to the event that started the Kree/Skrull War.
Notes
- Details the construction of the Blue Area of the Moon and the origin of the Kree/Skrull conflict.
- As revealed in Avengers: Forever #8, the "synchro-staffs" employed in this issue are in actuality shape-shifting Space Phantoms in disguise.
- Email correspondence between Paty Cockrum and the late Dave Cockrum confirms that he inked this cover. Paty responded to this editor in 2004, "I showed Dave the scans and he definitely remembers inking 133 (Avengers #133)."[citation needed]
- No letters page was published in this issue.
Continuity Notes[]
- All of the Kree are erroneously colored with pink skin instead of possessing blue skin, even though the pink-skinned Kree wouldn't appear until much later after the Kree stopped evolving.[1] Captions describe them as being blue skinned.
- A 2019 retcon has since revealed that the pink-skinned Kree were actually created by experiments performed on the original blue-skinned Kree by the alien Progenitors sometime before the Skrulls first visited Hala in Kree Year Zero.[2]
