Synopsis for 1st story
With an entity calling itself Rhizome attacking Brooklyn and having destroyed three buildings so far, Marcus gives Ben a mission report with orders by Beyond to intercept and resolve the creature's rampage. As Ben comments how it'll be easier to handle Rhizome than taking more Beyond bio-modified smoothies, Marcus reminds Ben that taking on Rhizome is a PR opportunity to show that Beyond's Spider-Man can take care of the whole city; and promises Ben to look into giving the smoothies better taste. Before leaving, Marcus reminds Ben to talk with the 'Brooklyn Spider-Man' about changing his name due to Beyond's copyright on "Spider-Man" but doesn't want to resort to fighting him.
Ben returns to Janine to let her know he's off on a mission, which she correctly deduces as the one in Brooklyn, and she asks of his well being given the recent fight with Kraven. Ben, self-aware of his past self being overconfident and insecure, assures her that he received the healing necessary while voicing how lucky he is to have her worry about him, and kisses her before departing with the promise to be home by dinner. Outfitted with a new rocket-glider gadget, Ben speeds over the East River right into Brooklyn, but Marcus lets him know the fuel burned is equal to a luxury jet and needs to be used sparingly.
Arriving in Bed-Stuy soon after, Ben's arrival is met with confusion as the locals are looking for wounded and personal belongings, displeased with his singleminded "assignment" to fight the monster, asking who he is. Spider-Man (Miles Morales) arrives to ask the same thing, noting Ben's voice is similar yet different from the original he knows, but the two fight until Ben lets slip Peter's name and Miles then asks his connection. Ben explains that he has Peter's blessing when he landed in hospital[1] and got help from Beyond, only for Miles to get angry again as Beyond is suing him for using the Spider-Man name[2], but both calm down after saving civilians from a collapsing wall.
Realizing they met during the recent multiversal Spider-hero event[3], they spend a few minutes to locate and battle Rhizome, raging how it cannot be stopped and will destroy brick and steel. Despite best efforts, Rhizome counters their individual attacks, so they coordinate with Ben webbing the creature for Miles to venom blast it, successfully downing the monster. Sensing an electronic device at the core, Miles short circuits it to find a man attached to some horticultural control technology and Miles recognizing the tech used as something from the Assessor, who is in the business of creating super monsters. With a successful team-up Ben goes to report back to Beyond while Miles investigates on his own, both departing on good terms.
At Beyond, Ben arrives to find Maxine Danger instead of Marcus, who she states is undergoing "disciplinary action" since he was in charge of Ben who didn't enforce Beyond's copyright ownership of the "Spider-Man" trademark. With Ben stating he did what he could short of beating on a teenager, Maxine's silence partly indicates her acceptance to such action. However, Maxine resumes by returning to her speech about Beyond's investment into Ben's actionability as Spider-Man. From the resources to counseling to living space, even bringing up the cost of his apartment and Janine's freedom from prison, Maxine concludes that Beyond sees Ben's potential to be a first-class hero, but only if he does what is necessary to be such a hero.
Minutes later, after asking Ben if he'll live up to the potential or throw it all away, Maxine is approached by a Beyond tech support employee, confirming her suspicions of the company being investigated. Finding that Otto Octavius is digging deeper into Beyond and the company's secrets, Maxine views their "octopus" problem as something mendable. As given Beyond specializes in solutions, she holds a canister of the vegetative mess from the Rhizome creature, contemplating her next solution.
