Beniamin Markarian (1913-1985) was one of the greatest observing astronomers of the 20th century. He was the author of the famous Byurakan surveys (First Byurakan Survey, FBS or Markarian survey and Second Byurakan Survey, SBS) and the discoverer of ~1500 UV-excess galaxies (Markarian galaxies).
