One of the most specialized, elongate, cylindrical Rhamphochromis species, most closely resembling R. esox. This and its congeners are known locally as "Mcheni" or "Ncheni" and are prized as food; they are often eaten smoked, and when so prepared are tasty, if bony. The species of Rhamphochromis are all pursuit predators, frequently feeding on the silvery, anchovylike minnow known as Usipa (Engraulicypris sardella). Photo copyright © by M. K. Oliver.
