*They're not "idol" singers, but I still add them anyway since I like their songs.

There's no official documentation of who is the first Japanese idol ever, but Okazaki Yuki (born: July 31, 1953) was definitely one of the earliest generation of idol. She made her singing debut in 1970, two years after her acting debut.

Minami Saori, also known as her Christian name: Cynthia, (born: July 2, 1954) was one of the biggest idol in early 1970s who debuted in 1971. Her songs might never reached #1 in Oricon chart, with #2 is her highest record, but to judge her success only based on that will be very misleading since her total song sales was still significantly higher than some other idols who have one or more Oricon #1 ranked song. She was big!
Minami Saori is a long-time close friend of Asaoka Megumi, since their idol days until decades later in modern days.

Like a vintage manga character comes to life, she was the cutest 1970s idol, period! Asaoka Megumi (born:October 11, 1955) made her debut in 1972 and instantly rose to fame. Her signature song about "left-handed boyfriend" was so hype in 1973, it inspired companies to manufacture products for left-handed people. Megumi wasn't only a top idol, but also a trendsetter that her signature "hime (princess) hairstyle", a hairstyle that was used by girls from noble family in ancient Japan, became a trend for young girls in early 1970s, from normal girls to some celebrities. That hairstyle also made her being called "hime-sama (princess)" sometimes. Even today, hime hairstyle still exists. Asaoka Megumi has 1 song that reached #1 in Oricon chart. As a singer, there's no doubt about Megumi's singing skill.
Megumi has long-time close friendship with Minami Saori and Asada Miyoko since their idol days until decades later in modern days.

Candies might be the first idol group in idol history, which members consisted of Miki (Fujimura Miki, born: January 15, 1956), Ran (Ito Ran, born: January 13, 1955), and Sue ( Tanaka Yoshiko, born: April 8, 1956). They made their debut in 1973 but only became really popular started from 1975. Candies have 1 song that reached #1 in Oricon chart.
In late 1977, Candies - still in the peak of their popularity - suddenly announced they would disband soon. The period between the announcement and their final concert was when their popularity rose even further to the next level. Their song sales and concert attendance exploded. So did the ratings of TV shows where they performed. They officially disbanded in 1978 and never perform together again. Sue died of illness in 2011.

Pink Lady are an extremely popular idol duo from 1970s consisted of Mie(Nemoto Mitsuyo, born: March 9, 1958) and Kei(Masuda Keiko, born: September 2, 1957), they were on par with Yamaguchi Momoe as the most popular idol of the '70s. Just like the title of one of their songs "Pink Typhoon", Pink Lady were so big they swept through the late 1970s with their hype like a pink typhoon.
Pink Lady have 9 songs that reached #1 in Oricon chart. They have ten songs that sold more than 1,000,000 copies each. They appeared in a lot of tv ads, any product they advertised would get massive boost on sales. They have their own anime with them as the main character. They released Pink Lady dolls (like Barbie-type doll) and other merchandise. They were so big in their era, they even have a tv show in the US called: "Pink Lady and Jeff".
Even the biggest typhoon will cease. After their decline, Pink Lady announced in 1980 that they would disbanded the next year. After that, Pink Lady would reunited only to disband again several times in: 1984, 1989, 1996 and 2003. Matsuda Seiko (born: March 10, 1962) , dubbed: "the eternal idol", was undisputedly the biggest idol in 1980s, bigger than any idol ever existed in 1970s and 1980s. She's the "queen" of idol!
In 1980, Yamaguchi Momoe retired and Pink Lady announced their disbandment. Losing two biggest stars leaving a huge hole in idol industry that despereately needed someone to fill. Rookie idol: Matsuda Seiko was expected to become the next Momoe, but instead of becoming someone's heir, Matsuda Seiko became herself, built her own "throne", SURPASSED Yamaguchi Momoe (and any idols ever existed before her), and became the "queen" herself!
Since her debut in 1980, Matsuda Seiko has 25 songs that reached #1 in Oricon chart. Seiko was so dominant in early 1980s, she's simply on another level, no other idol could matched her.... except one person, her arch-rival, the other "queen".

Nakamori Akina (born: July 13, 1965) was one of two overwhelmingly popular idols in 1980s, one of the two "queens", the only person who could rivaled Matsuda Seiko back then, and surpassed everybody else from their generation with their ridiculously high stats. She made her debut in 1982 and started from her 3rd singles, her songs started to dominated #1 spot in Oricon chart. In total she has 22 singles that reached #1st rank in Oricon Chart.
In every different era - whether it's athlete or celebrity - sometimes there'll be a great rivalry between two generational greats who have surpassed everyone else and only competing for the top between themselves. Such thing also existed in idol world. Onyanko Club ( pronounce: O-Nyanko-Club, means: the kitty club) was the first large scale group in idol history. They were formed in 1985 and introduced in their own variety show called "Yuuyake Nyan Nyan". They started with a formation of 11 members, but then they kept adding new members by audition from that tv show. In the end they have a total of 52 members registered under Onyanko Club. As for their age range, the oldest member was born in 1965 and the youngest one was born in 1971. But it doesn't mean all these 52 girls were all there at the same time. When some new members were accepted, some old members might have already 'graduated' ( the term they used when a member quit the group), so they were never all 52 members together. And when they performed on stage, it was usually mostly main members with less than 20 people. Beside the main group, Onyanko Club also have 3 sub-units; small sub-groups with a few girls each.
Onyanko Club have a short but very successful career. They have released 9 main singles with 6 of them reached #1 in Oricon chart.
Onyanko Club officially disbanded after their last concert in September 20, 1987. Some of their ex-members switched to solo idols with successful careers, each of them have several Oricon #1 ranked songs. Some of them became actress, etc. But among all ex members, the most popular one was obviously Kudo Shizuka.

Wink were a very popular idol duo in late 1980s to mid 1990s, consisted of Suzuki Sachiko (born: February 22, 1969) and Aida Shoko (born: February 23, 1970).
Suzuki Sachiko and Aida Shoko first met in 1987 when they both participated in a beauty contest held by a magazine. They befriended each other for awhile but stop catching up. One year later, in 1988, a coincidence (they called it fateful meeting) brought them together when Sachiko and Shoko somehow went to audition at the same company in the same day. They were about to audition as solo singer, but the audition staff thought their voices would be better to complement each other and suggested them to form a duo. A series of coincidences brought them together, Wink were born. Even their birthdates almost looks like a coincidence.
Wink came with a unique concept: singing with expressionless faces without smiling. Add that with their doll-like costume (in earlier phase of their career; changed into normal clothings in later years) and doll-like coreography. Imagine opening a music box, then two extremely beautiful dolls come out singing and dancing, that's the perfect way to describe Wink! Their concept were different, fresh and made them stand out.
Wink have their place among elite top idols in their era. Based on their total sales they were arguably the 7th most popular female idols of 1980s. They have 5 songs that reached #1 in Oricon Chart.
Every celebrities will eventually declines. The inevitable came to Wink in mid 1990s and eventually Wink "disbanded" in 1996. But they refused to call it disbandment, and technically they're not completely disbanded since in every decade (mostly every 10th of their anniversary), Sachiko and Shoko will temporarily reunite again as Wink for one day. So far they've had their reunion performance in 1998, 1999, 2008 and 2018.

Moriguchi Hiroko (born: June 13, 1968, real name: Hanamura Hiromi) was an idol singer in 1980s. She dreamed to be a singer since childhood but her path was full of hardship. She already faced rejections in more than 100 auditions before she even started, and once she finally debuted as idol singers in 1985, though her debut single was moderately successful and used as Gundam OST, all her next singles from 1986 - 1989 flopped really bad, to the point that she was almost dismissed from her company.
They didn't fire her, she would be put into a different path of career; as a variety idol (*idol specializes in variety show). Her new role landed her more jobs. She started to appear in more and more variety shows. Her speciality back then was to impersonate other idols. She started to establish her name as "variety idol", but still, she wanted to sing.
After years of hardship, her time to shine finally came in 1991 when she released her song: "Eternal Wind" , another Gundam OST which became her biggest hit and brought her to her first Kohaku Uta Gassen. She would continue performing in Kohaku Uta Gassen every year from 1991 to 1996, six times in total. SPEED were an extremely popular girl group from mid to late 1990s with their members: Arakaki Hitoe (born: April 7, 1981) (leader), Uehara Takako (born: January 14, 1983), Imai Eriko (born: September 22, 1983) and Shimabukuro Hiroko (born: April 7, 1984). They made their debut in 1996 while still in very young ages even for idol standard, with their average age back then was 13.5 years old. They were very young but quickly rose to the top, surpassing most singers older than them.
How big were SPEED in their prime?
- They have 5 songs that reached #1 in Oricon chart.
- They have 4 singles with 1,000,000+ sales each. Their single with the "lowest" sales (by their standard) still sold 580,000+ copies. And then they have 2 albums with 2,000,000+ sales each, one album with 1,900,000+ sales, and even the one with "lower" sales (by their standard) still sold 880,000+ copies.
- Their total sales (singles + albums) in their entire career are about 19,646,009; that made them surpassed some of Japan biggest female idols like Pink Lady, Yamaguchi Momoe, Kudo Shizuka, Nakayama Miho, Koizumi Kyoko (Kyon2).... and only lose to Nakamori Akina and Matsuda Seiko.
- In "Top 50 Japanese Idols of All Time" list from 2011, SPEED were ranked in #5. (* Matsuda Seiko was #2 and Nakamori Akina #3)
- They have performed 4 times in Kohaku Uta Gassen 1997, 1998, 1999, 2008
- Most of those were achieved only in 3 years and 8 months (1996 - 2000). If they have longer career, they might even topple the "queens" from their thrones.
SPEED disbanded in March 2000. By then, all their members already have solo singles and wanted to pursue their solo careers independently. After the disbandment, SPEED have a short reunions in 2001 and 2003, and reunited permanently in 2008 and wanted to start over again, but unfortunately they can never reached the level of their prime ever again. Nakayama Shinobu (born: January 18, 1973) was an idol in late 1980s. She's the younger sister of the 3rd biggest female idol of 1980s: Nakayama Miho. One day, Shinobu was at the airport with her family to see off her sister. The staff of her sister's agency saw her and scouted her. She made her debut both as actress and idol singer in 1988. As a singer, she has released a total of 8 singles and 3 albums from 1988-1990. Her total song sales are 239,230 sales.
Having a superstar sister came with its disadvantage. Instead of being recognized as herself, people keep seeing her as "Nakayama Miho's sister". The last straw came in 1991 when she became a guest in a variety show about impersonating celebrities (which was a trend back then). Before the show, her agency already made agreement with the program to not ever mentioning her sister. Yet during the show, one of the comedian didn't follow the script and made his own ad-lib, he told Shinobu to impersonate her sister. She had enough of it so she decided to stop singing and focus on building her own acting career.
Acting was where she found her success. In 1995, Shinobu won "Best Supporting Actress" awards in various award shows that year for her movie "Gamera", and her sister Miho won two "Best Actress" awards for her own movie. It was the first time in history that two sisters of Japanese actress to win award at the same year. In her entire career, Nakayama Shinobu has appeared in a total of: 155 dramas and 20 movies. There was once a very popular variety show: "Kin-chan no Doko Made Yaru no!" aired from October 6, 1976 to September 24, 1986 with average ratings of 30%. The show was in the format like slice of life drama following the daily life of Hagimoto family. Hagimoto family have three daughters, previously played by dolls and child actors, but in 1982 the three sisters characters had grown up as high school students and they casted the three young actresses: Takabe Tomoko, Kurasawa Atsumi and Takahashi Mami to play them.
The three girls also formed an idol trio called Warabe and debuted on December 21, 1982 (which technically made them also one of the class'82 idols, the star-studded year that produced a lot of big idols with successful careers). They had a very promising start with their debut song exploded with very high sales.
Unfortunately in June 1983, one of the members: Takabe Tomoko involved in a certain scandal and resigned from that show and the group. The two remaining members continued as Warabe until July 1985, they decided to re-boot the show with the three sister characters played by entirely new casts. Following that, Warabe disbanded.

Rebecca was once a very popular pop rock band active in mid 1980s to 1991.
Their members have changed several times but these are their current members:
- Nokko (born: November 4, 1963), real name: Yamada Nobuko, vocal
- Dobashi Akio (born: September 19, 1960), current leader, keyboard
- Takahashi Noriyuki (born: December 10, 1959), bass
- Odawara Yutaka (born: February 6, 1963), drum
*among their ex-members, the notable mention is: Kogure Takehiko (born: March 8, 1960), the founder, former leader, composer and guitarist of the group.
Rebecca was formed in 1982 as an amateur band. They originally had a male vocalist but soon replaced by Nokko. They won CBS/Sony audition in August 1983 and made their professional debut on April 21, 1984. Their first year was tough with their first two singles couldn't even make it into top 100 in Oricon chart. January 1985, Rebecca took another blow with their founder/leader/composer/guitarist: Kogure Takehiko and their drummer left the group. Somehow they could survive with new members.
April 1985, their third single entered Oricon chart for the first time although only at #54. Then came their fourth single "Friends" in October 1985 that exploded into a big hit, followed by their fourth album that reached #1 in Oricon chart and sold 1.3 millions copies one month later. After that, hit songs and high selling albums started to follow.
In their career, Rebecca have released a total of 17 singles and 7 original albums. There's no information about their total sales but their total singles sales are 1,954,000.....AND then they have 1 album with 1,300,000 sales and three more albums with 800,000+ sales each. Although they don't have an Oricon #1 ranked single, their last four albums all reached #1 in Oricon chart consecutively. They have performed 1 time in Kohaku Uta Gassen.
Rebecca disbanded on February 14, 1991. They had two short reunion in 1995 and 1999, and then finally reunited permanently in 2015

Nagayama Yoko (born: January 13, 1968), was a very popular enka singer, but before that she also used to be idol singer from 1984-1990.
She already attended folk song class since 4 years old. When she was a kid, she also appeared in some comedy programs, especially on the folk song segment. In 1984, she planned to debut as enka singer but then her agency though the then 16 years old Nagayama Yoko was too young to be enka singer, so they made her debut as idol singer instead on April 1, 1984. Then she became regular member in the music program "Let's Go Young" from April 1985 to April 1986.
She released her last single as idol singer in 1990 and then stopped her singing career to focus on acting. In 1993, she re-debuted as enka singer and immediately reached an entirely different level, became a very big enka singer who performed 14 times in Kohaku Uta Gassen (1993-2007).
As idol, she has released a total of 17 singles and 5 original albums. Her total single sales as idol are 600,000 copies but there's no information about her album sales. As enka singer, she has released a total of 55 singles and 44 original albums. Her total single sales as enka singer are 2,340,000 copies but there's no information about her total album sales. She also has acting career which she appeared in 19 dramas (1985-2017) and 1 movie (1988).

Ito Tsukasa (born: February 21, 1967) was a top idol in early 1980s. When she was a kid, she joined a children theater group and appeared in drama for the first time in 1973. According to a producer, as child actress she was seen as a "child prodigy" and "could act better than adults".
In 1980, she played in a popular teen drama "San nen B-gumi Kinpachi Sensei", and one year later, September 1, 1981, she debuted as idol singer. Her bunny teeth became her trademark look.
Ito Tsukasa has released a total of 9 singles and 8 original albums in her career. There's no information about her total sales (all singles + all albums), but her total single sales alone are already 917,560 copies (*add that with 8 albums, obviously her total sales are above 1 million and deserved to be called top idol). As for her acting career, she has starred in 66 dramas (1973 - 2015) and 2 movies (1991, 2003). She also has voiced 2 animes (1984-1986) and 2 anime movies (1991, 2003).

Shonentai was a male idol trio once very popular in mid to late 1980s with their members:
- Nishikiori Kazukiyo (born: May 22, 1965), nickname: Nikki, the leader of the group.
- Uekusa Katsuhide (born: July 24, 1966), nickname: Kacchan.
- Higashiyama Noriyuki (born: September 30, 1966), nickname: Higashi.
The name "Shonentai" was originally just another name for "Johnny's Junior", a group of young trainees belong to "Johnny & Associates" (*the infamous entertainment agency most big male idols signed to back then), there were about 20-30 people at that time. In 1981, four of them were put into a group simply called "B Team" appeared on singing programs as backup dancers for more senior Johnny's idols like Tahara Toshihiko (Toshi), Kondo Masahiko (Matchy), etc. In 1982, one of the members left, and with the three remaining members, the group's name changed into "Johnny's Shonentai". Later the group's name changed again into just "Shonentai" and held their first solo concert in April 1984, still before their official debut.
Shonentai officially made their debut on December 12, 1985. Kitagawa Johnny once called their group "the best masterpiece" in his agency. Unlike a lot of other idols who barely had any training, Shonentai were properly trained for years in vocal, dancing and any other lessons needed for entertainment.
In their career, Shonentai have released a total of 26 singles and 6 original albums. Nine of their singles and two of their original albums reached #1 in Oricon chart. They have performed 8 consecutive times in Kohaku Uta Gassen 1986-1993. In 2011, "Music Station" released their version of "Top 50 idols" list, Shonentai were ranked #31 with total sales (all singles + all albums) of 5,480,000 copies. For their acting career, as a group (not including the members' solo career) they had appeared in 10 dramas (1983-2001) and 4 movies (1982-1987). Shonentai also had their own musical series called "PLAYZONE" that was held every year from 1986-2008.

Miyazawa Rie (born: April 6, 1973) was a top idol active in very late 1980s to early 1990s, and an award-winning top actress.
She was born in Tokyo to a Dutch father and a Japanese mother. Her entertainment career started at the age of 11 when she featured on the front cover of the "Seventeen" magazine. One year later in 1985, she made her first TV appearance by starring in three different commercials. Miyazawa Rie made her acting debut in 1988, starring in a movie and won "newcomer of the year" in "Japan Academy Award". April 1989, she played her first leading role in a drama. And then, September 15, 1989, she debuted as idol singer.
In her singing career, Miyazawa Rie has released a total of 7 singles and 3 albums. She has one Oricon #1 ranked single. Her total song sales (all singles + all albums) are about 1,069,960 copies. She has performed once in Kohaku Uta Gassen 1990.
Miyazawa Rie was bigger as an actress, she has appeared in a total of 54 dramas (1988-2021) and 31 movies (1988-2023). She has also performed in 37 stage plays (1991-2024). She has won a total of 34 movie awards (1988-2019), 2 drama awards (2003, 2014) and 5 theater awards (2004-2017). She also has appeared in a lot of CMs.

Mihara Junko (born: September 13, 1964) was a top idol active mostly in the first half of 1980s. In 1972 on her second grade of elementary school, she joined Fuji Theater Company and started to appeared regularly in their performances. In 1979, she got a regular role in the popular drama: "3-nen B-gumi Kinpachi Sensei" and her popularity skyrocketed due to the delinquent role she played. Mihara Junko made her singing debut on September 21, 1980, which made her one of the first generation 1980s idols (*debuted the same year as Matsuda Seiko, Kawai Naoko, Kashiwabara Yoshie, Iwasaki Yoshimi, etc).
In her career, she has released a total of 20 singles and 15 original albums. There's no information about her total sales (all singles + all albums), but she has 4 singles with 100k+ sales and 1 single with 200k+ sales; her total single sales alone are about 1,047,000 copies, add that with the sales of her 15 albums (*her first album alone has sold 328,000 copies), there's no doubt that Mihara Junko was a top idol when in her prime. And she has performed 1 time in Kohaku Uta Gassen in 1982.
Mihara Junko also had a successful acting career which she has appeared in 106 dramas (1978-2010, a lot of one shot drama and guest roles) and 18 movies (1980-2010).

Mizuki Arisa , born: December 5, 1976, was a top idol in 1990s and a very big actress in her era. She began her career as child model from the age of four, appearing in some commercials and modelled for magazines. Entering her pre-teens, she made her acting debut by starring in a drama in 1988, co-starring with SMAP in their debut drama. She then made her singing debut on May 15, 1991. Being a big actress, a lot of her songs were used as theme songs for her dramas.
In her career, she has released a total of 25 singles and 7 original albums. Her total sales (all singles + all albums) are 2,991,888 copies. With that kind of numbers, she was clearly a top idol, even more impressive considering she achieved that during "idol winter period" when most idols failed.
But Mizuki Arisa was even bigger as an actress. She has starred in a total of 83 dramas (1988-2024) and 12 movies (1991-2024), playing a lot of lead roles. In fact in 2010, she was recorded in Guiness World Record as the actress who got at least one lead role in drama every single year for 19 consecutive years (1991-2010). And....apparently that record needs to be updated because she still got at least one lead role in drama every single year until 2023.
* In 1997, she officially changed the romanization of her name from Mizuki Arisa into Mizuki Alisa.

Watase Maki, nickname: Chanmaki, born: February 22, 1969, was an idol briefly active from 1987-1988.
She was a fan of Matsuda Seiko (the biggest 1980s idol) since elementary school, even dressed as her, imitating her hairstyle, and singing mimicking her when she was a kid, which inspired her to become singer. In 1986, she won "1986 Young Jump Queen" - a contest held by Young Jump magazine - out of 8,000 applicants and entered the entertainment industry. She made her debuted as idol singer on June 2, 1987 (*debuted the same year as Moritaka Chisato, Sakai Noriko, Tachibana Risa, BaBe, Ishida Hikari, Hatada Rie, etc).
In her idol career, she has released a total of 3 singles and no album. Her total sales as idol singer are 33,580 copies. She barely has acting career, she only appeared once in a movie in 1990.
In 1988, Watase Maki who didn't feel being an idol suit her decided to switched to rock and formed a band: LINDBERG, with her as the vocalist. They made their official debut on April 25, 1989.
Out of all their singles, four of them reached #1 on Oricon chart and four other reached #2. Their highest selling song sold 610k copies. There's no information about their total sales, but their total single sales alone are 5,781,000, and that haven't included their 17 original albums, 7 "Best" albums, a lot of compilation albums, etc. They have even performed once in Kohaku Uta Gassen.

Note:
* Based on this video , Abe Shizue has at least 2,000,000 copies of total sales. I can't find data of the exact figures.
* If this list is based on acting career, Saito Yuki or Minamino Yoko or Nakayama Miho would probably ranked the highest. Kokusho Sayuri might also be ranked somewhere at the top. Okada Nana was also specialized as an actress than as a singer. And then, there are Yakushimaru Hiroko and Harada Tomoyo who were specialized in movies.
* Onyanko Club's ex-members total sales might be lower than other solo idols, but they have contributed to the numbers that Onyanko Club have achieved, especially since they were the most popular members; so that aspect also need to be considered. In case of Takai Mamiko and Iwai Yukiko, among 3 Onyanko sub-groups, their duo: Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi have contributed the most sales (1.7 miliion+ sales) , so that too should be credited to their achievements
* As for the others, I can't find the data of their total song sales.
* They're all women because those are from my own translations, which I only translate songs of female idols. But male idols (solo, vocal group, boyband) exist; in fact many of male idols are more popular than female idols.
* Matsuda Seiko is not the end of all. There are at least one modern idol group (AKB48) and two boybands from 1990s (SMAP and Arashi) that have surpassed Seiko's achievement. And if we talk about Japanese singers from all genre (including non-idol singers) there are a lot of bigger singers than her. But, if we only talk about retro idols from 1970s - 1980s, Matsuda Seiko and Nakamori Akina were indeed the two "queens" who were simply on another level compared to any male and female idols from that era.
* Nakamori Akina supposed to be on par with Matsuda Seiko, but her total sales are lower??? This is the detail explanation. Seiko debuted 2 years earlier and already became the "queen" even before Akina's debut. Between 1980 to 1981, Seiko had released 7 singles (total sales: 3,931,000 copies) and 4 albums (total sales: 1,682,000). To be fair, Seiko also had a short hiatus in 1986 (because of her marriage and childbirth) in which she didn't release any single for one year but still released 1 album with 567,000 sales. In 1986, Akina had released 4 singles (total sales: 1,253,600) and 2 albums (total sales: 1,063,900). In 2000s and 2010s, although both already in decline, Seiko released more new songs while Akina had another hiatus for several years. But when both were in their prime, it can be seen that they were equal and used to have a fierce battle in Oricon Chart. Even the idol fanbase back then were splitted in two between Seiko and Akina.
* I will keep updating this list everytime I add another idol to my translation series.
Each of retro idols (and a few non-idol singers) highest selling song:
Not to be confused with the list above of their total sales (all singles + all albums), this list only consist of the sales of one song; each of their highest selling song. Each singer has their best weapon, their trump card, even for some of them these were songs that turned their fortunes and brought them to the peak of their careers. My main source is : idolpopdatabase.com ; and then there's some from their wikipedia page from ja.wikipedia.org. Using more than one source could cause conflicting information, but it's inevitable since none of those sources is complete, so they need to complement each other. Some of these numbers are from Oricon, some are from their own internal sources. Personally, I believe more on Oricon than internal source, since Oricon supposed to be neutral and has no interest to make some artists look bigger than they were, so I will prioritize data from Oricon unless it's not available. I only write these based on those sources, I can't guarantee the accuracy of these data. So here they are:
- White Love - SPEED (1998) , 1,844,790 copies
- Makenaide - ZARD (1993), 1,645,552 copies
- UFO - Pink Lady (1977), 1,550,000 copies
- Anata ni Aitakute ~Missing You~ - Matsuda Seiko (1996), 1,101,320 copies
- Diamonds - Princess Princess (1989), 1,097,000 copies
- Anata ni Aete Yokatta - Koizumi Kyoko (1991), 1,054,150 copies

Notes:
- Nakayama Miho has a song with 1,833,250 sales, but it was collaboration project with a band. That's like a combine forces of two parties, not fair to compare that with solo songs of other idols. I will only put her real solo song on that list.
- Nakamori Akina doesn't have a 1 million sales song despite how big she was and how high her total song sales are. Meanwhile Pink Lady and SPEED have a lot of million sales songs, how can they lose to Akina? The key is consistency. The type of Pink Lady and SPEED are like fireworks, they suddenly came with a loud bang, their popularity exploded, but it didn't last long; in less than 5 years, either they declined or disbanded. Meanwhile Akina's peak last about one decade, she has tons of songs and albums with 400k - 500k sales each. When it all summed up, Akina's total sales (all singles + all albums) are still above the like of Pink Lady and SPEED. The same logic can also be applied to Matsuda Seiko; despite how dominant she was, she "only" has one 1 million sales song (and that was in 1996, not in her highest peak in 1980s). But SPEED stats were really amazing though. When they were disbanded, they were still in their peak. If they didn't want to go solo, if they endured it a few more years, they would most likely surpass the "queens".

"queen" vs "queen" of another country:
Nakamori Akina and Anita Mui were each top diva in their respective countries. Both were connected by triangle love and hurt by the same guy. These are videos of them singing the same song.

But both seemed to be decent persons and respected divas. It was that certain guy's fault. So rather than versus, let's just watch them in hypothetical duets in fan-made videos:
Idols vacation in Hawaii, 1987 with star-studded rosters.
The cast members include: Oginome Yoko, Nakamori Akina, Kyon2, Nakayama Miho, Kikuchi Momoko, Kakusho Sayuri, Nishimura Tomomi; and male idols: Matchy, Toshi, and boyband trio called: "Shibugakitai". Too bad there's no Hayami Yuu even though that's in Hawaii.
The video is 50 minutes long, if it's too long, i'll just write up the summary. The video includes scene of each of them enters the other's hotel room with master key and give them a surprise wakeup with cameras all around while the target is still in pajamas and sleepy face without makeup (Akina wakes Matchy, Matchy wakes Oginome, Oginome wakes Toshi, Toshi wakes Miho, Miho wakes Shibugakitai, Shibugakitai wakes Momoko, Momoko wakes Tomomi, Tomomi wakes Sayuri, Sayuri wakes Kyon2, Kyon2 wakes the pro-wrestler: Dump Matsumoto), And then there are scenes of them playing games, fishing on the boat, outdoor dinner, playing golf... with each female idols singing their song in between in a style like they're shooting MV with Hawaii scenery on the background.
List of songs performed in that video:
- (18:12) Oginome Yoko - Sayonara no Kajitsutachi
- (20:50) Nishimura Tomomi - Hajimemashite Ai
- (25:15) Kikuchi Momoko - Nile in Blue
- (33:09) Koizumi Kyoko - Smile Again
- (37:22) Nakayama Miho - 50/50
- (47:40) Kokusho Sayuri - Sore Ijou, Are Miman
Update:
The video is back!!
1970's idols in 1980's:
The age difference between 1970's idols and 1980's idols are varied from just a few years to 10+ years. The oldest 1970's idol like Amachi Mari is about 20 years older than the youngest 1980's idol like Sakai Noriko. So, what were they look like one decade later in 1980's?

Minamino Yoko (Nanno) in 1997 (30 years old)
Asaka Yui in 1993 (24 years old)
^ after releasing that song, her contract with her agency and record company expired and she didn't extend it, she instead announced hiatus and disbanded her fan club. After that, it seems like she lost her right to use the stage name "Asaka Yui". In 1994, she released a photobook under her real name: Kawasaki Aki. In 1997, she established her own agency and made comeback with new stage name "YUI" and released one single in 1997 and another one in 1998. Seems like she never performed those songs on TV. This was Asaka Yui in 1998 in the photo of her CD cover (29 years old). In 2000, she reconciled with her old agency, regained her "Asaka Yui" stage name, and started to appear in dramas and reality shows.
Onyanko Club in 1996 (members were about 25 - 31 years old)
^ reunion with 22 members. OMG, they shouted "Yuuyake Nyan Nyan~" and sang "Sailor-fuku o Nugasanaide" again, and even introduced themselves with their Onyanko numbers. ^ Ito Miki (yellow dress) singing together with other idols: Honda Risa and Aikawa Eri. All three of them were solo idols but they formed that trio called "Horikoshi Dynamite" as a project of a reality show. The name Horikoshi refers to the highschool they graduated from: the Horikoshi high school; the high school that had A LOT of celebrities. Matsuda Seiko, Nanno, Okada Yukiko, Honda Minako, Oginome Yoko, Moritaka Chisato, Sakai Noriko, Nishimura Tomomi, Watanabe Minayo...and even Ito Miki and those two others were all from Horikoshi high school (obviously from different years). Going back further, even Okada Nana and Iwasaki Hiromi were also from Horikoshi high school. Even Aida Shoko (Wink) almost transfered to Horikoshi high school. Retro idols then and now
1980s idols then and now:
^ some less popular idols were mixed in there too
^ they are mostly Onyanko girls, except Sakai Noriko and Nishimura Tomomi.
What 1980s idols might look like if they wear modern haircuts and makeup style used by modern Japanese idols:
^ Matsuda Seiko, Kawai Naoko, Matsumoto Iyo, Yakushimaru Hiroko, Kyon², Hori Chiemi, Hayami Yuu, Nakamori Akina, Oginome Yoko, Kikuchi Momoko, Saito Yuki, Kudo Shizuka, Nakayama Miho, Asaka Yui, Minamino Yoko
What Nakamori Akina might look like in modern hairstyle and costume usually worn by modern Japanese celebrity:
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/450711875218783129/
^ She looks stunning! That's not fan made. It's her real photo from 1991 that looks too modern for 1991.
More of what these past idols might look like in modern hairstyle and make up:
It was made with software / apps, so of course it's not perfect. Some looks more like cartoon character than real person. It's just for fun. Credit to the Youtuber who made all of these.
^ The real model is someone else but they said they put Nakayama Miho face on it with A.I, and that looks so real. And that seems to be Miporin in her 30s.
^ A.I recreated retro idols faces: (0:00) Moritaka Chisato, (1:00) Asaka Yui, (5:02) Tomita Yasuko, (6:03) Watanabe Minayo

=============================================
It's not always easy to find what retro idols look like now. Some of them already retire, some of them aren't that active on TV anymore, etc. But there's one reliable source to find them. It's Nishimura Tomomi official blog. Tomomi is still active in entertainment (still appear in radio show, tv programs, variety shows, etc) and she has A LOT of retro idol friends that she is still close with. All these photos are from 2023 alone, look at how many retro idols she has met just in this year (some as guests in her show, some as hang out friends). These are their most recent looks:
Tomomi and Sakai Noriko: 1, 2, 3, 4
Tomomi, Nori-P and Kashiwabara Yoshie: 1
Tomomi and Watanabe Minayo: 1, 2
Tomomi and Ito Chieri : 1
Tomomi, Ito Chieri, Watanabe Minayo: 1
Tomomi and Tachibana Risa: 1
Tomomi and Shimada Nami: 1
Tomomi and Kikuchi Momoko: 1
Tomomi and Minamino Yoko (Nanno): 1
Tomomi and two "Class'83 idols": Morio Yumi and Matsumoto Akiko: 1, 2
Tomomi and Iwasaki Yoshimi: 1, 2
Tomomi and Ishikawa Hitomi: 1
Tomomi and Mie (Pink Lady): 1
^ Nanno appeared in a Thailand tv show (?) , February 2023, singing "Toiki de Net".
*update:
Just found out what this is all about. This is bigger than just Nanno performed in foreign tv program. But first, that's not Thailand but Cambodia.
It started in February, 2022:
video with youtube id VtpDt0YP5gg was removed automatically due to unavailability
^ this song was said to promote friendship and diplomatic relationship between Japan and Cambodia. The clip also shows young Nanno when she visited Cambodia in 1989 to do a live report. For the detail, simply read the video description on Youtube.
And then one year later in January 2023:
^ Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs appointed Minamino Yoko as "goodwill ambassador" to commemorate 70th anniversary of Japan diplomatic relationship with Cambodia and promote friendship between the two countries.
So the video at the top was her singing in Cambodian TV program one month later. Yo! Nanno is so cool! Not only Agnes Chan can do this kind of stuff, Nanno too.
^ Nanno sang in a park in Cambodia, 2023
Saito Yuki, 2022
Saito Yuki.....'s daughter, 2022
^ Mizushima Rin, born: November 18, 1999. She made her debut as singer in September 2022. In that video, she covered her mom's song.
^ "Yan Yan Uta Studio" reunion in 2015. Among the guests, there were 1980s idols: Kashiwabara Yoshie, Matsumoto Iyo, Hayami Yuu, and Fu-kun (Shibugakitai).

^ 1980s idols get-together, June 2023. There are so many of them, I'll just mention the ones I know. (0:08) Onishi Yuka, (0:11) Hayami Yuu, (0:14) Kokusho Sayuri (black scarf) and Tanaka Minako (gray and white checkered shirt), According to the video description, there were also Asaka Yui, Nishimura Tomomi, Iwasaki Yoshimi although I can't see them in that video (maybe they had left earlier). Some of those women seem to be "class '83" idols. The men are mostly celebrities, so they're probably their work colleagues. The restaurant owner couldn't stop smiling to have so many past idols in his restaurant. The video is from Tanaka MInako official Youtube channel.
^ from another angle. This one is from Ito Kazue (one of 1980s idols) Youtube channel.

^ "Kamen Rider Gotchard" is the newest Kamen Rider series currently airing. One of the former 1980s idols plays there as the main character's mom. Guess who... (1:13, she only appears for two seconds in the entire trailer, you gotta see her quick).
P. S:
The history of Kamen Rider series and idols are quite closely related since both started around the same time. Quite a lot of retro idols have played in Kamen Rider series, either as guests or regular casts. Some played there when they were kids before becoming idols, some when they were teen idols..... and even in modern days when they're old enough to play as someone's mom.
BREAKING NEWS:
She's back
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kwf4bmGr9IU
OMG!! The "queen"!! The one and only Nakamori Akina!! 708k views in half a day.
Both "queens" recorded their newest videos around November 2023. I hope Akina releases a single or album next year to give excuse for Kohaku to bring both "queens" back to Kohaku Uta Gassen 2024. 😆
Maybe she will release self-cover album or single.
Or at least she needs to be active on YouTube, sing karaoke on YouTube (like Hori Chiemi), or appear in Hayami Yuu or Toshi channel, go sing "Makenaide" with other idols, appear in Tomomi radio show (or just her blog, Akina was the one who took care of Tomomi in Hawaii when she got seasickness, they know each other), anything. People just want to see the "queen". 😆
Yes. Kudo Shizuka didn't achieve anything spectacular or had any new hit song in 2022, she only needed to show her comeback and appeared on TV here and there, and she was invited to Kohaku 2022, probably based on past merits. They only need to appear on TV several times and I'm sure that's enough for Kohaku to call both "queens" back. Then, maybe we'll finally see the "queens" have a duet (just the two of them, no Toshi / Ken Naoko / senior singer, etc standing between them). 😆
Maybe Micchon will invite her to her Mission In-Possible YouTube series lol 😆 (But I wish she would have called it Micchon In-Possible)
I want to see her with Kyon Kyon once again! Wonder if they kept in touch, hopefully they did. Maybe we'll see her in Hayami Yuus car going for a stroll while they talk and catch up
It'd be nice to see a couple of Retro Idols back on Kohaku, but seeing as most of them stopped singing or just lay low I think it'll be reserved to Shi-chan, Akina, Seiko, and maybe Hiroko Yakushimaru. Hayami Yuu has been really active in music tho
I didn't know she has YouTube channel. What's it called? Or can you put the link?
Akina and Kyon² reunion is a must. 😆 I read somewhere that when Hori Chiemi survived her surgery, she wanted to have a reunion with all "group '82" idols but couldn't find Akina's contact. So maybe even Kyon² couldn't reach her.
There's the "queen" and the other "queen", but.... there's someone else:
video with youtube id -7avq3qx7tE was removed automatically due to unavailability
^ the song originally written, composed and sung by Kawai Naoko in 1993, but it will be used as movie OST in 2024. So, maybe even NaoNao will appear on TV again? 😆
Heres the video that I saw:
Interview with Yuri Kunizane, a 1988 idol! There are even some photos of them togheter when they were young!! 😆
Also heres the link: https://www.youtube.com/@IN-rq2mz
Hopefully she comes back stronger than ever!! I wouldn't mind seeing them togheter or even performing a duet!
Hopefully she does, I mean maybe they invited her to the premier or something, we want to see NaoNao again!! 😆

Just Idols Looking Cute
Anything cute related to retro idols: cute clips, cute scenes, cute interactions, cute costumes, cute stage sets, cute commercials, cute drama bloopers, cute comedy skits, etc, or even the moments when the idols doing nothing but somehow still look cute.
The whole concept of "idol" revolves around being "kawaii" (*cute) after all, so it doesn't hurt to include some cute clips in idol documentary.
*if you can't find some of their names in the list on this page, they're probably from the list on the part 2 or part 3 page.

Modern idols sing retro idols songs
SKE48 (*a branch of massive idol group: AKB48) sang medley of retro idols songs
(0:00) the part where the video was cut seems to be Shiroi Parasol - Matsuda Seiko (* the last word of the lyrics and the melody match)
(0:03) Smile For Me - Kawai Naoko
(1:35) Nantettatte Idol - Koizumi Kyoko
(3:23) 1986'nen no Marilyn - Honda Minako
(4:42) Sailorfuku o Nugasanaide - Onyanko Club (*mother / ancestor of AKB48)
(6:34) Fuyu no Opera Glass - Nitta Eri (*with Nitta Eri (ex-Onyanko member) herself)
AKB48 sang medley of retro idol songs (and dressed in their iconic costumes):
(0:14) opened with Kyon2's Nantettatte Idol, (0:40) Pink Lady - UFO, (1:15) Candies - Toshisita no Ottokonoko, (1:43) Matsuda Seiko - Aoi Sangoshou, (2:12) Wink - Samishii Nettaigyo, and (2:43) closed it again with Nantettatte Idol again. At this point, Kyon2's Nantettatte Idol almost sounds like idol's anthem. Although we never see the real retro idols sing that song together, but at least there's the parody version of them sing it together.
AKB48 once again singing medley of retro idol songs. This seems to be from early 2010s
^ among the audiences, there were Asaoka Megumi, Hayami Yuu, Matsumoto Iyo.

Wink and YamadaKatsutenai Wink
"YamadaKatsutenai Wink" was a parody group imitating Wink. Yamada Kuniko, a very popular presenter and comedian back then, acted as the fake Shoko, and then she did an audition and casted a normal teenager: Yokoyama Chie as the fake Sachiko.

Horikoshi High School
Horikoshi High School is a private high school located in Tokyo, opened in 1923. It's known to have a lot of celebrities and athletes among their graduates.
Some of these retro idols who used to study in Horikoshi High School (*not in particular order because it's impossible to search their graduation years one by one) :
Iwasaki Hiromi, Okada Nana, Oba Kumiko, Sakakibara Ikue,
Ishino Mako, Iwasaki Yoshimi, Matsuda Seiko, Hamada Juri
Kashiwabara Yoshie, Matsumoto Iyo, Sakaue Toshie
Hayami Yu,
Hori Chiemi, Okada Yukiko, Minamino Yoko, Honda Minako,
Oginome Yoko, Moriguchi Hiroko,
Watanabe Minayo, Moritaka Chisato, Yamase Mami
Nishimura Tomomi, Sakai Noriko, Ito Miki, Honda Risa
Takahashi Yumiko,
*Aida Shoko of Wink almost moved to Horikoshi High School. When she was 16 (*1986?), she already signed contract with an agency and about to debut but her school regulations prohibited it. She considered to transfer to Horikoshi but then she thought she couldn't stand the pressure of going to school with so many celebrities. She postponed her debut until she graduated and it's proven to be the right decision. If she debuted prematurely, she might not meet Suzuki Sachiko, there wouldn't be Wink, and she might only become random mid-level or low-level idol with short lived career.

Nakano High School is also a private school in Tokyo that have a lot of celebrities used to study there. It was opened in 1929 and the building is attached to Meiji University.
Some of these retro idols also used to study in Nakano High School. Not all of them graduated here, in fact more than half were transfered here from other schools, studied here for awhile then dropped out midway - I won't specify which ones. Kondo Masahiko (Matchy), Kawai Naoko, Tsuchiya Kaori,
Nakamori Akina, Princess Princess (3 of their members including the vocalist),
Koizumi Kyoko (Kyon2), Ishikawa Hidemi, Mita Hiroko, Morio Yumi,

Momoco Club , started as idol magazine in 1983. While other idol magazines usually only featured real professional idols, in Momoco Club they featured any random girls that they deemed potentially could become idols; with dozens of girls introduced in each issue. Later they had their own variety show called "Momoco Club", aired from 1986 - 1987. Their "members" included girls recommended by other members, amateur idols, people picked by their editorial and basically any girls who have appeared at least once in their magazine. A selected fews would appeared in their variety show. In total, they have 3,516 "members" registered!! Some of 1980s idols who used to be "members" of Momoco Club are Sakai Noriko, Nishimura Tomomi, Shimada Nami, Ito Miki, Hatada Rie, etc ......even Kudo Shizuka used to be their "member" before she joined Onyanko Club. The magazine was discontinued after January 1994 due to the decline of female idols.

"Star Tanjou!"
"Star Tanjou!" (スター誕生!, means: "A Star Is Born!") is a talent show aired from 1971 to 1983. This is not any normal singing contest; a lot of "Star Tanjou!" winners and ex contestants later would turn into big singers. These are some of them

- (0:03) Mori Masako, the first winner of "Star Tanjou!" in 1971, debuted in 1972 as idol singer, later switched into enka in 1977. A big enka singer who has performed 15 times in Kohaku Uta Gassen! Mori Masako together with Yamaguchi Momoe and Sakurada Junko were called "Hana no Chusan Trio" by the media; each of them was a very big singer in their era
- (0:32) Sakurada Junko, probably the 3rd or 4th biggest 1970s female idol. She won "Star Tanjou!" in 1972 and debuted in 1973.
- (1:03) Yamaguchi Momoe, a "Star Tanjou!" contestant in 1972, she made her debut in 1973 and became the biggest 1970s female idol, the "queen".
- (1:38) Iwasaki Hiromi, participated in "Star Tanjou!" in 1974, debuted in 1975 and became the 3rd biggest 1970s female idols on par with Sakurada Junko
- (2:53) Two girls who dressed like Super Mario Bros before Super Mario Bros existed; Nemoto Mitsuyo and Masuda Keiko were finalist in 1976 "Star Tanjou!", they debuted at that same year with the stage name Mie and Kei, replaced that lame costumes and concept with something cool in their era, and the infamous Pink Lady was born! Pink Lady were the biggest 1970s female idol (on par with Yamaguchi Momoe) who rocked late 1970s with their hype and casually released songs with 1,000,000+ sales each.
- (4:14) Ishino Mako, won "Star Tanjou!" 1977 and made her debut as singer in 1978. She was a top idol in late 1970s who has performed two times in "Kohaku Uta Gassen"
- (4:40) Kashiwabara Yoshie, winner of "Star Tanjou!" 1979, she made her debut in 1980 as one of the first generation 1980s idols. Yoshie was a top idol. She has performed two times in "Kohaku Uta Gassen" and nominated in "Japan Record Awards" for seven consecutive years.
- (4:57) Koizumi Kyoko a.k.a Kyon2, she was a contestant in "Star Tanjou" 1981 and debuted as idol singer in 1982. There were three girls whose stats were on another level compared to "normal" female top idols in 1980s - the super idols each qualified to be called 3rd biggest 1980s female idols; Kyon2 was one of those three.
- (5:56) a girl who looked very normal, she later turned into a super charismatic singer and a legend in Japan music industry. The great Nakamori Akina was the winner of "Star Tanjou!" 1981, debuted in 1982 and became one of the two biggest 1980s idols, one of the two "idol queen" of 1980s.
- (8:44) Honda Minako was a contestant in "Star Tanjou!" 1982. She made her debut in 1985 and became a top idol. Her vocal was one of the best among 1980s idols. Honda Minako died in 2005.
- (13:29) Sato Kayo was a participant in "Star Tanjou!" 1982. She made her debut as idol singer in 1984 with the stage name: Okada Yukiko and became a top idol. Poor Yukiko died in 1986 when she was at the peak of her career.
- The other girls became mid-level idols.

^ Ozaki Yutaka (born: November 29, 1965) was a popular singer in the 1980s. "I Love You" was his highest selling song, released on March 21, 1991, it reached #5 on Oricon chart but sold 484,000 copies.
But there's a rumor that this song was actually dedicated for Saito Yuki?
Timeline:
- Ozaki Yutaka and Saito Yuki (and two other singers) each released song with the same title: "Sotsugyo" around the same time in 1985. It's just a coincidence, graduation was a popular theme for songs after all.
- In 1988, Ozaki Yutaka was put in detention center for drug possession. He saw Saito Yuki in a photobook and that book was what comforted him. Somehow he became a "fan" (?). 3 months later he married a non-celebrity woman
- November 1990, Ozaki Yutaka and Saito Yuki met for the first time in a magazine interview: 1, 2
- March 1991, the media discovered that Ozaki Yutaka and Saito Yuki were just having a trip with just the two of them: 1 .
- Still in March 1991, this single was released. The cover looks like this. Perhaps it looks similar to a certain picture.
- These are the lyrics. Let the lyrics seep in and try to imagine what the story is about. 😆
- They broke up in October, 1991.
- To be fair, this was an old song recorded in 1983 (long before he knew Saito Yuki, who debuted as singer in 1985), he was about to make it his single but it was rejected by his label back then and ended up as album filler song. He re-released it in 1991 and became a big hit................. but....... but, who said someone can't re-release his old song when he feels his old song is related to his recent life event? 😉
- Only he knew the truth, but unfortunately Ozaki Yutaka died in 1992 at the age of 26. It will remain a mystery. Whoever this song was intended for, the fact is that this song was a big hit that has been covered by many singers even after his death.
Princess Princess
^ Princess Princess used to be idols !!!
^ Their group were called Akasaka Komachi; formed in 1983 (with the exact same members) and debuted in 1984.
They felt uncomfortable with the idol route set by their management so in 1985, they quit and moved to other management company. They changed their group name into "Julian Mama", but hadn't released any songs during this period.
In 1986, they changed their group's name once again and Princess Princess (*can also be called by their cute nickname: Puri Puri), an all-girl rock band, was born.
