All of those Type 1 fonts have OpenType versions too (at least if your distro isn't ancient).

I know, Fedora and iirc Ubuntu ship these as Type 1 though.

I think Debian & Ubuntu have OpenType versions of those fonts in the 'fonts-texgyre' package.

Those are different implementations of the original fonts iirc, that might have different metrics.

It's kind of messy, just like font technology itself is :)
