From the measureless depths of a woman's emotions...

The deep conversation between a Japanese architect and a French actress forms the basis of this celebrated French film, considered one of the vanguard productions of the French New Wave. Set in Hiroshima after the end of World War II, the couple -- lovers turned friends -- recount, over many hours, previous romances and life experiences. The two intertwine their stories about the past with pondering the devastation wrought by the atomic bomb dropped on the city.

movie is explicitly about the "horror of forgetting" which means i'm allowed to earnestly transcribe and post my favorite part of the opening 16-minute mono-prologue in a futile effort to remember it, merci beaucoup!

Once again I dip my toe into French New Wave. Waters I have seldom enjoyed. It should be noted that I didn’t know I was going to take this swim again, as I knew nothing about the film other than the familiar haze of its name and adoration. I haven’t seen any other Alain Resnais, so as the opening credits unfurled I had no clue. But wait, it’s French, it’s 1959. Oh oh. Well, I didn’t really hate Breathless .. although I found the lead pretty detestable, and after all, I do like Truffaut. Maybe this won’t be so bad after all.

Hiroshima Mon Amour is both a great film and some of the most pretentious clap trap I've ever seen.
It is as much a beautiful ode to overcoming the despair of utter destruction as it is a terribly misguided self-important comparison between the main character's lost love and the world's most horrific disaster.
It is beautifully photographed and scored, and so melodramatic at times that it is laugh out loud funny.
It's poetic dialogue sings, but the dreariness is too heavy.
It wants to be passionate but the "come here, go away, come here, go away" antics of the cut-out cardboard character turn it into a farce.
Hiroshima Mon Amour is a great innovative film that makes me appreciate Hollywood.

"The temperature of the sun in Peace Square."
a nightmarish half forgotten memory. one of the most impeccably directed films i've ever seen, and that prologue is some of the best 15 minutes ever committed to celluloid. Godard was playful, Truffaut was insightful, but Resnais manages to be both while also being brutal. french new wave never fails to surprise me.
