]]>"going where?"
you think you know how to write a screenplay and then you watch a billy wilder movie and its like oh lol
]]>the most perfect movie to ever exist, the transition from dorothy's sepia-tuned house to the technicolor land of oz is as seismic of an event to me as landing on the moon or the fall of the berlin wall. what else to say but one of the definitive examples of cinematic wonder and excitement.
]]>can you imagine what it must be like to be the person who runs the skye riley updates twitter account
]]>much sillier and much hotter than the first, its incredible how much this is a denzel washington showcase and how pretty spectacularly paul mescal can hold his own in his scenes with him. ridley definitely does not care about historical accuracy in his Late Stage but that's honestly more of a benefit than hindrance. very fun! buff sweaty men fighting in imax. the sword and sandal epic is back babeyyyy
]]>??????????????????????????
?????????????????????????¿¿¿????
imagine its 2007. you are a world famous actor with a career spanning 30 or 40 years. you have been nominated for an oscar. now suddenly a 13 year old named saoirse ronan debuts and delivers one of the defining performances of the 21st century, gets nominated alongside you, and she hasn't graduated high school yet. she doesn't end up winning, but you know deep in your heart you still lost. and you will live with the knowledge that this child and her lethal bob will have her boot on the necks of not only you but every other actor for the next 20 years.
]]>"there is a silence where no sound may be."
when ada removed the broken plank from the pianos crate and started playing through the crates gap, i knew i was watching a masterpiece. and the craziest part is the film never deviates from that level of beauty for even a second afterwards.

]]>an essential early text of both visual language and poetry in the cinematic space. witness the rise of an empire in just a few stationary shots.
]]>has some truly gnarly set pieces and violence that's presented in a pretty unsettling and creative matter-of-fact fashion, but the presentation constantly feels like its running on fumes. kind of feels pointless to have all these established rules and go against them just because the main character is a hothead? anyways, fun! but The Wailing did it better.

]]>is this an airport paperback thriller designed to enthrall scores of retirement home residents? arguably. is this still an engrossing and genuinely thrilling story? absolutely, even more so i suspect for people like me who were raised in the church and find its history completely fascinating and at times utterly contemptable. if you know what "tridentine mass" means, you are going to enjoy this.

]]>"some are called for their gregariousness. some are called for their suffering. others are called for their loneliness. they are called by God, because through the vessel of communication, they can reach out and hold beating hearts in their hands. they are called because of their all consuming knowledge of the emptiness of all things, that can only be filled by the presence of Our Savior."

]]>"i can't hear my children."
faith as a series of aftershocks. one of the best christian films ever made is about an alien invasion.
]]>i struggle to think of a film in recent memory that moves like The Substance does. there's a sickening, constant sense of escalation supported by a nightmarish soundscape and ingenious camerawork that comes together in a way where it never feels sluggish or any shot is wasted. i've come to be wary of films where their marketing is heavily reliant on how "totally fucked up" or "crazy" it is. mother! by aronofsky is just one example i could list, as it did something similar and while i appreciated that film for what it was, it wasn't the hand-over-mouth monstrosity it promised itself to be. what sets this film apart from other films that promote themselves as insane is that coralie fargeat's unique direction is so carefully controlled and constantly moving that it actually delivers a genuinely amazing theatrical experience. when so many horror films end and it feels like we're still in the 2nd act, The Substance reaches such a fever pitch by the end that i found myself physically twisted in my seat by the time the credits rolled. fargeat not being interested in subtlety isn't a bug, it's a feature - and what a feature this is. demi moore oscar campaign begins effective immediately.
]]>remains the best final shot of any movie of this decade so far
]]>This review may contain spoilers.
hunter schafer and dan stevens prove their chops for leading roles as if we didn't already have enough evidence for that (steven's clearly had fun with his mustache twirling german accent), and i especially enjoyed the fizzled out silver fox cop who stepped right out of an 80's giallo. all three of them played off each other swimmingly in that final set piece. with all of that said this all feels like it should've been building up to something appropriately nastier and more satisfying but never does. i feel like you can't be a horror film about experimentation and not lean into the body horror aspect of that? great atmosphere, camerawork and performances but c'mon, you can afford to get a little crazier.

]]>im not sure what late ridley meeting cormac mccarthy in the script would be like to experience as an audience member but i wasn't expecting a casual, almost playfully flippant way the criminal process is carried out here. your killer may be a jogger on the street or someone you're flirting with during a layover at an airport bar. you could be begging for your life to someone who says they'd rather take a nap after just explaining to you how your choices will lead to the annihilation of all reality and yourself. something about all of this makes it more visceral and disgusting in a way that makes me want to shower this movie off after seeing it. shoutout to the catholic priest who denied listening to cameron diaz's sins, probably the only character in the movie who did his job competently.

]]>you think you've seen everything - good direction and acting and camera placement in films before - but then you see john cassavetes and gena rowlands and peter falk and in that instant, even in the most quiet moments, it seems as though everyone else is a complete amateur.
the most astonishing acting i've ever witnessed and the hardest (and most rewarding?) film i've ever sat through. there is something so beautiful about peter and gena, a real honest beauty, that makes me well up.
