Intermissio vel intervallum est recessus inter partes perfunctionis vel productionis, sicut ludus theatricus, opera, concentus, vel pellicula. Non confundendum est cum entr'acte (Francice, 'inter actus'), quod saeculo duodevicensimo fuit perfunctio cantata, saltata, vel dicta, vel perfunctio musica inter quoslibet actus peracta, quod principali perfunctioni non arte conexum est, et quod ergo in mundo operatico et theatrico perfunctio musica factus est quae per intermissionem duravit et in actum proximum sine pausa duxit.

Marmontel et Diderot intermissionem considerabant tempus quo actio re vera non desinit, sed extra scaenam persistere potest. "Intervallum spectatoribus, non actioni, est requies," scripsit Marmontel anno 1763.[1] "Traduntur personae fabulam agere per intervallum ab uno actu ad alium."[2] Intermissiones autem sunt plus quam tantum pausae dramaticae qui partes sunt structurae dramaticae: existere possunt ob alia consilia: spectatores scaenam plus quam duas horas difficiliter attendunt, atque histrionibus et aliis qui perfunguntur requiescendum est. Intermissiones occasionem scaenarum et ornatuum mutatorum dant. Praeterea, theatra per intermissiones cibum et potionem venumdare possunt.
