Chiaroscuro Records è una etichetta discografica jazz fondata da Hank O'Neal nel 1970.[1]
Storia
[modifica | modifica wikitesto]Il nome dell'etichetta deriva dal termine artistico per l'uso della luce e dell'oscurità in un dipinto. O'Neal inventò il nome tramite il suo amico e mentore Eddie Condon, un musicista jazz che si esibì in quelli che sono stati chiamati Concerti Chiaroscuro nel 1930.[2] O'Neal ha anche preso il nome da un negozio che vendeva solo abiti bianchi e neri.[3]
O'Neal diresse l'etichetta dal 1969 al 1977 e produsse tutti gli album tranne due. Il suo catalogo comprendeva Earl Hines, Joe Venuti, Teddy Wilson e Ruby Braff.[4][5]
O'Neal vendette l'etichetta alla Audiophile Enterprises nel 1978,[4][5] poi ricomprò il catalogo quando fondò la SOS Productions nel 1987. Chiaroscuro pubblicò nuovi dischi e ristampe negli anni '90.[4]
Nel 2011, i fondatori di Chiaroscuro donarono la società alla Northeast Pennsylvania Educational Television Association, proprietaria della WVIA-FM-TV, membro della PBS e della NPR per la Pennsylvania nord-orientale. La WVIA-FM ha utilizzato la libreria di Chiaroscuro per avviare una stazione all-jazz sulla sua terza sottoportante HD.[6]
