  • 2007 Classical historian Richard Saller, provost of the University of Chicago, is appointed the Vernon R. and Lysbeth Warren Anderson Dean. In 2010, he is named the inaugural Kleinheinz Family Professor of European Studies.
  • 2001 Sharon Long, professor of biological sciences, is appointed as the inaugural Vernon R. and Lysbeth Warren Anderson Dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences.
  • 1998 Malcolm Beasley, professor of applied physics
  • 1993 John Shoven, professor of economics
  • 1988 Ewart Thomas, professor of psychology
  • 1981 Norman Wessells, professor of biological sciences

  • 1951 Douglas Whitaker, professor of biology, is named dean. A year later, he becomes Stanford’s first provost.
  • 1948 Clarence Faust, professor of English, is appointed the inaugural dean of H&S.
