The Bowery is a district located in Uptown Gotham City. It is bordered by Burnley to the west, Crime Alley to the north and by Robbinsville to the east. Sprang Bridge and at least two other bridges that cross the Sprang River connect the Bowery with the Upper East Side in Midtown.

History[]

When Carmine Falcone was still the ruling crime lord of Gotham, the western portion of the Bowery was part of his crime family's territory. While he gave over his territories in Fashion District and Theatre District to his underboss Fish Mooney, the Bowery was personally controlled by Falcone himself. The location of Don Falcone's territory in Burnley and the Bowery District was marked on a map of Gotham City that was owned by Oswald Cobblepot. He used it to study Gotham's criminal underworld and the mob bosses controlling it.[1]

Approximately one year later, the southern part of the Bowery District was seen on a city map when Nathaniel Barnes and James Gordon were trying to find out who was responsible for the five acts of arson that tormented Gotham in the previous night.[2]

The Bowery also appeared on the Court of Owls' map of Gotham City.[3][4]

After Edward Nygma was freed from the block of ice in which he was frozen for months, the Bowery was included on a city map that Ed used when he was trying to plan his revenge against the Penguin.[5]

No Man's Land[]

When Gotham City became a No Man's Land, Mr. Freeze started to claim his territory in the Bowery. At night, he entered an old factory that had already been taken over by a different gang. When one of them tried to attack him and stated that this was the sector of his gang, Victor simply used his Freeze Gun to incease the man in ice. Fries then proclaimed that it was now his territory.[6]

In the following months, Victor Fries cemented his position as the ruler of the vast majority of Bowery District. By day 87, his territory had extended to also include the western end of Robbinsville. However, at this point, Mr. Freeze had also engaged in a turf war with Firefly and her gang, who had claimed Burnley as their territory.[7]

During the No Man's Land crisis, Victor's territory in the Bowery was marked on James Gordon's city map at the GCPD.[8][9]

At some point over the course of the next months, the GCPD managed to reclaim the sector previously controlled by Mr. Freeze. By day 391, all the villain territories in Gotham had become part of the GCPD's Green Zone.[10]

Notes[]

  • As one of Gotham's main districts, the Bowery is a recurring location in the Batman mythos and appears on the official map of Gotham City in DC Comics.
  • In other media, the Bowery has appeared in the video games DC Universe Online, Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Origins. It was later also featured in the 2019 TV series Batwoman.
  • The district seems to be an homage to the Bowery neighborhood in the southern portion of Manhattan, New York City.
  • In the comics, the small inner-district Crown Point was part of the larger Bowery district. It is unknown if this is also the case in the continuity of Gotham.
