Hello Lichess-community,
This idea is tied to idea #14398. There is a growing community playing slow chess formats, like Lichess4545-League (45+45), Lichess4545-Lonewolf (30+30) or Series (90+30), which I belong to. As we, in theory, have options to play as long as 180+180 games, I would appreciate it, if it was possible to add a second time control. In my observation it is a common occurrence that slow chess games deteriorate somewhere between move 30 or 40. In OTB chess, a very common time control is 90+30 with additional 30 minutes after move 40. As that is often where late middlegames/endgames start, one has a clear goal of reaching move 40 in order to play these phases properly without severe time trouble.
In Lichess, there is no "milestone" to reach w.r.t. to the move count. It's quite doable to distribute your time consumption such that it suffices for 40 moves. Without the second time control, however, one has to be ready to face scenarios where games go far beyond move 40. It is very difficult, though, to think about time consumption distribution for such scenarios. And that's where a second time control would at least provide a possible time format to play a high-level game even past move 40.
I'm curious about possible feedback and am grateful for an upvote, if you feel like this might be a good idea, too.
Sincerely,
