Steps toward better information security
Japan’s national cybersecurity strategy came into focus as the country had to prepare for several years for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which were eventually postponed to 2021 due to the COVID19 pandemic. Government ministries and agencies cooperate with the National Center of Incident Readiness and Strategy for Cybersecurity (NISC), which was established in 2015 and is tasked with strategy and policy planning. In 2016, the government established the Personal Information Protection Commission (PPC), which is responsible for enforcing Japan’s data protection law, the Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI), in the private sector. Survey data show that an overwhelming majority of Japanese respondents
feel insecure when using the internet because of a possible leak of personal information or one's browser history. Despite these concerns, however, it is common for people to disclose personal information online, such as one’s gender or hobbies. According to a global survey on online users, four out of five Japanese respondents
want to do more to protect their privacy.
