In 2019, roughly 49 percent of Dutch consumers aged 12 years and older used a cloud application. Compared to 2018, cloud computing in the Netherlands slightly increased. The overall IT services market in the Netherlands is forecast to reach around 12 billion U.S. dollars by 2021.
Cloud is mostly used in HR and education
Which sectors in the Netherlands use cloud technology? Almost half of all cloud software or Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions in 2018 concerned HR and office automation applications. Vertical applications (like online learning environments, automation solutions for local governments and software for organizations in healthcare) made up around 13 percent of SaaS solutions. Microsoft (due to its applications in Office365) was the leading supplier of software in the cloud. In Dutch secondary education, however, Magister is the most used cloud solution. Students, parents and teachers can access this environment, and it is used to keep up with the administration, management and health issues of students. Users can also enter the system to look at their grades, timetables, homework assignments and absences.
Remote work increasing?
Does the use of cloud computing in the Netherlands influence teleworking or “home offices” in the country? Whilst no data is available that answers this question directly, the number of telecommuting workers (referred to in the Netherlands as thuiswerkers, which roughly translates to "home office workers" in English) did increase between 2013 and 2018. In 2018, roughly 2.4 million employees and 878,000 self-employed persons made use of a home office.
