At the end of 2023, around 388,700 foreign cross-border commuters were working in Switzerland. This was an increase compared to the previous year and a continuation of the growth trend.
Foreign cross-border commuters are employed persons of foreign nationality with a specific cross-border commuter permit who are in paid employment in Switzerland. Cross-border commuters must return to their main place of residence abroad at least once a week.

The values have been rounded. According to the source, the results are subject to a certain degree of uncertainty. The coding of some variables is neither mandatory nor subject to plausibility tests. Furthermore, some job changes are not necessarily reported and are only recorded in the register when the cross-border commuter permit is renewed, which may be reflected in the data on place of work, economic sector and, to a lesser extent, employment status.
Since 1 June 2007, nationals of EU-17/EFTA member states are no longer bound to the border zones. This means that cross-border commuters can pursue gainful employment in all cantons.
