In 2023, the northwestern region of Uruguay had the highest prevalence of food insecurity in the country, with approximately 15.5 percent of households reporting moderate or severe food shortages. The capital region, Montevideo and Canelones, had the second highest level of severe food insecurity at roughly 2.7 percent of households.
