Mergers and acquisitions in the gaming industry are often worth billions and create lots of buzz. The biggest announced video gaming M&A deal of 2023 was the acquisition of mobile games company Scopely by the Savvy Games Group in April 2022 for 4.9 billion U.S. dollars. The Savvy Games Group is wholly owned by the Saudi government’s Public Investment Fund, signaling country's interest in expanded gaming investment.
However, the value of 2023 gaming M&A deals do not hold a candle to the blockbuster year of 2022 - in January 2022, the two biggest gaming acquisitions ever happened within barely a week of each other - on January 10, Take-Two Interactive announced its purchase of social gaming company Zynga, signaling a stronger focus on mobile gaming. January 18, 2022, saw the surprise notice of Microsoft acquiring Activision Blizzard for close to 69 billion U.S. dollars.
