The Egyptian area of Cairo‑Alexandria‑Suhag was the largest city cluster in Africa as of 2021. Considering the over 1,000 cities that are part of the cluster (cities with over 30,000 residents that are within 100 kilometers' distance, adding up to a population of over 2.5 million), the area counted around 92 million inhabitants. The clusters of Lagos‑Ibadan‑Cotonou and Onitsha‑Uyo‑Port Harcourt in Nigeria followed, accounting for approximately 46 million and 43 million residents, respectively.

"Compact city clusters consist of cities with more than 30 000 inhabitants that are within 100 kilometres by road with a total urban population of more than 2.5 million inhabitants (including their own population). Cities that meet this criterion within 100 kilometres of each other by road are assigned to the same cluster. Cities that do not meet the criteria above, but which are located within 60 minutes’ travel of a city that does, are assigned to the same cluster".
