Kurt Cobain vs Guitar Hero - Dave and Krist speak
Just read this over at Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl issued a statement on Thursday objecting to the use of the late Kurt Cobain's likeness in Guitar Hero.
"We want people to know that we are dismayed and very disappointed in the way a facsimile of Kurt is used in the Guitar Hero game. The name and likeness of Kurt Cobain are the sole property of his estate - we have no control whatsoever in that area. While we were aware of Kurt's image being used with two Nirvana songs, we didn't know players have the ability to unlock the character. This feature allows the character to be used with any kind of song the player wants. We urge Activision to do the right thing in 're-locking' Kurt's character so that this won't continue in the future."
Looks like the ball rests at Courtney and Guitar Hero's feet then. Apologies to Mr Grohl for implicating him in this debacle. Now, would he mind making a good record again, one of these decades?

seriously thoug, look at him in that picture, could a mumpty face like that EVER make a good record?
ReplyDeleteFor God's sake, give Dave a break :) I wonder what a younger Larry Pickleman looked like...
ReplyDeleteCan't deny the fact that he hasn't been coming up with the best music in the world but he shouldn't feel bloody embarrassed about it.
Ey, Larry, the FF debut is a good record.
ReplyDeleteJust a shame all the others after it were terrible and got progressively worse...
Making good music is really freaking hard, especially when you have so many people expecting greatness of you.
ReplyDeleteYou have to be ultra-sensitive and really in tune with the world around. That reality-junkie-girl with the bleach blonde hair certainly couldn't make a good record, but the crazy-hermit-cat-lady could.
He shouldn't feel embaressed abou his music??...fuckin' right he should, and as for his ridiculous catwalk stages that he swings his hair around on...jesus fucking christ!!!...young larry was hot as fuck btw ;)
ReplyDeletethird foos album is a pretty good power pop record, you know
ReplyDeleteI dig FF's debut as well and I think all of his other outputs have been at the very least decent... ONE BY ONE was rather strong and damn, he drummed on SONGS FOR THE DEAF folks... let's see how his record with Josh Homme and John Paul Jones (THEM CROOKED VULTURES) sounds like...!
ReplyDeleteDave should totally stick to drumming
ReplyDeleteI saw Nirvana in Belfast in 93. One of the worst gigs ever. A week later he fell asleep on stage in Amsterdam. "Narcolepsy" says his manager. "Drugs" says the audience.
ReplyDeleteI saw them in Dublin the night before supporting Sonic Youth and they blew the fuck out of Thurstan and co...

My 10 yr old son naturally assumes that the images associated with DK's "Holiday In Cambodia" in Guitar Hero are the actual likeness! Geez!

Ahaa! Well after that gig he probably "overcelebrated" hence the sleepiness ;-)
ReplyDeleteCourtney Love thrives on this type of publicity but the fact remains that:-
ReplyDeleteGuitar Hero CEO Dan Rosensweig said that the use of Cobain is completely legal.
In an interview with NME, Rosensweig said, "I do know that there's absolutely a contract and we know that the cheque has been cashed… I can only deal with the facts. It's very clear what the terms are.”
I bet if he published the contract, Courtney Love's signature would be on it. She's just acting up because she desperately needs the publicity.
