Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle Dutch souten, from Old Dutch *saltan, from Proto-Germanic *saltaną. The verb was originally a class 7 strong verb, but the verb became weak early on and only the strong past participle was preserved. The past form would have been *zielt, parallel to houden and hield.
