[edit]From Low German tritzen (and variants). Equivalent to Trieze (“winch”) + -en. The modern sense is figurative from the nautical punishment.

- to disturb or annoy someone, especially in order to provoke a reaction; to goad
- (nautical, dated) to pull something up with a winch, (historical also) to punish a seaman by pulling him up in such a way
