[edit]From Proto-West Germanic *þwangi (“strap”), from Proto-Germanic *þwangiz, from Proto-Indo-European *twenk- (“to squeeze”). Cognates include Old English þwang (“thong”), Old Saxon *thwang and Old Dutch *thwang. The change in meaning is shared with Dutch dwang (“compulsion”).
