Etymology
[edit]From either South Slavic or East Slavic, from Old Church Slavonic сѫбота (sǫbota), from Byzantine Greek *σάμβατον (*sámbaton), from Ancient Greek σάββατον (sábbaton), from Hebrew שַׁבָּת (šabbāṯ). The borrowing occurred in the eleventh century during the Christianization of the Hungarians, and before the loss of the nasalised vowel -on- in Slavic languages. Compare Bulgarian събота (sǎbota), Serbo-Croatian subota, Russian суббота (subbota).[1][2]
