[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Polynesian *renga from Proto-Oceanic *renga. Cognate with Hawaiian lena, Tahitian reʻa, Samoan lega and Tongan enga all meaning "turmeric".[1][2] Sense of colour comes from hue produced by the plant (compare with Hawaiian lenalena), eventually displacing the original meaning when the plant did not survive the cold New Zealand climate.[3]
