Etymology

From Low German pladdern, with shortening before -er- (as e.g. in verheddern) from Middle Low German plāderen. Cognate with Middle Dutch pladeren (dialectal Dutch plaaieren, plaren). Ultimately of onomatopoeic origin; compare plätschern, prasseln.
