[edit]Probably borrowed via Basque from Vulgar Latin *pistanna, from an uncertain Indo-European language, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *pstḗn (“teat, nipple”); compare Proto-Germanic *spenô (“nipple”) and Ancient Greek στῆθος (stêthos, “breast, chest”). Related to Spanish pestaña.
