[edit]From Old Galician-Portuguese passaro, from Vulgar Latin *passarum, from Latin passer (“sparrow”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *p(e)t-tro- (“who flies, bird”), from *peth₂- (“to fly”). Compare English passerine, Spanish pájaro, Romanian pasăre.
