Welcome

[edit]
NerdyNSK, Welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope you like this place — I sure do — and want to stay.

You may want to read about the Five pillars of Wikipedia and simplified ruleset.

If you need help on how to title new articles check out the naming conventions.

For help on formatting the pages visit the manual of style.

If you need help look at Wikipedia:Help and the FAQ.

If you can't find your answer there, check the Village Pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions)!

There's still more help at the Tutorial and Policy Library.

Plus, don't forget to visit the Community Portal.

Feel free to post questions on my user talk page or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will be by to help you shortly.

If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you. You can sign your name using three tildes (~). If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Five will get you the datestamp only.

You may want to add yourself to the new user log.

If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.

On IRC, check out the Bootcamp. It's not what it sounds like, but it is fun and can help you with your editing skills.

If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.

Happy Wiki-ing.Kf4bdy talk contribs

PS: This is not a bot and you did nothing to prompt this message. This is just a friendly welcome by a fellow Wikipedian.

Edit summaries

[edit]

I have noted that you often edit without an edit summary. Please do your best to always fill in the summary field. This is considered an important guideline in Wikipedia, and even a short summary is better than no summary. Thanks. Picaroon9288 01:38, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please support complement EU !!!

[edit]

Hi,as a EU supporter maybe you´d like to support this: I´m trying to implement the 'EU' in the city-templates of European city articles. The EU should be mentioned next to the country; like country : Spain / EU Please support the enhancement in these templates and argue for the innovation if you want to. Would be great.

Thanks for your kind words.

Our lab is trying to contribute to the OLPC (aka $100 laptop) effort. I'd welcome your help. If you're interested, consider creating a Greek demo of an educational application; probably based on the Squeak platform <http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Squeak>. In this way you can work on your own machine, and then we can then demo it on the actual OLPC hardware.

Tor Lillqvist

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Tor Lillqvist, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Angus McLellan (Talk) 15:27, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. If you believe that Lillqvist merits an article, you can ask at WP:DRV for it to be undeleted. I suspect that the article wouldn't survive at WP:AFD, but you can certainly ask for other opinions. Very best wishes, Angus McLellan (Talk) 13:51, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the nomination (also see What Wikipedia is not and Deletion policy). Your opinions on why the topic of the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome: participate in the discussion by editing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Meanings of asteroid names (139001-140000). Helping out with the Unassessed Wikipedia Biographies

[edit]

Seeing that you are an active member of the WikiBiography Project, I was wondering if you would help lend a hand in helping us clear out the amount of [unassessed articles] tagged with {{WPBiography}}. Many of them are of stub and start class, but a few are of B or A caliber. Getting a simple assessment rating can help us start moving many of these biographies to a higher quality article. Yes, it is true that Wikipedia would not have 2 million pages articles today, if it weren't for red links. I agree that red links is not a bad thing when used appropriately, but I don't think its so suitable to use it for inappropriately things like people who don't have sufficient notability to warrant an own article. 7-Zip is a great software, which I use myself. But it along with the SDK is the only thing hes known for, hes not known for anything else. -- Frap 16:57, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

graphism

[edit]

Per your suggestion I moved the reference to graphism to Philosophy of mathematics, but I'm a bit unsure whether I put in the correct place within that article. A paper indicated that maths use less graphs than natural sciences, and there is a proposition that graph use is higher in hard sciences than soft sciences. Therefore, if the proposition is true, we see that the graphism thesis has a direct relation to the question "is maths a science?". I know this has to be expanded further, but for now that's what I can do, and I hope someone else can step in and improve on my contribution. NerdyNSK 16:43, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It might be a good idea to broach the subject at the article talk page, or at WP:WPM (the project for coordinating maths articles) to get wider input on this. I'm only one chap, and my expertise in mathematics, such as it is, is directed towards mathematical analysis and its implications. --Mark H Wilkinson (t, c) 16:55, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your edits to Swarm Intelligence

[edit]

I have reverted a batch of your changes to Swarm Intelligence. For one, you added few ambiguous wikilinks that do NOT lead to the relevant wikipages (such as Beni and Wang). Secondly, there is absolutely no value in wikilinking trivial common words that are not important in the context of the article; like movie, mathematics, environment, etc. Wikipedia is not a Hyperdictionary. Please consider the relevance of wikilinks if you are going to re-add them into the article. Thanks. Alex Pankratov 19:53, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OpenLearn

[edit]

A {{prod}} template has been added to the article OpenLearn, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you endorse deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please tag it with {{db-author}}. Phgao 18:19, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Plesae note, I did that as the article currently is very short, and perhaps it should redirect instead. Thanks! If you don't agree, feel free to remove tag. Phgao 18:20, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I agree in some point, but in the end, I did not redirect it, I left that up to you. You may wish to do drafts on a subpage of your user page next time or like you say place that tag up! As I patrol new pages, one must make those decisions. See you around! Phgao 18:35, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

GNU/Linux

[edit]

Hi. I just saw the discussion on User talk:Thumperward about the GNU/Linux name.

FWIW, his claimed consensus does not exist. If I had had time, I would have contested Thumperward's "tidying" wave where he removed all "GNU/Linux" links from en.wikipedia.org. --Gronky 01:00, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Consensus does exist, and contrary to Gronky's claims he knows full well that I'm as clued-up to the history of GNU, Unix and Linux as he is. I do not, however, interpret the history of the project the same way he does. Wikipedia's free software articles would improve immeasurably faster if the pro-FSF people would stop finding conspiracies to force them off Wikipedia wherever they turn and instead actually engage in discussion in the appropriate places rather than hanging around each other's talk pages congratulating each other of not being as "ignorant of history" as the rest of the project. Gronky's seemingly given up trying to sway the project, and is instead engaging random editors on their talk pages. That's not a way to build consensus. Not to be over-demanding but do you think you could visit the WXXS discussion page and read the final section of the page? If not, I was just asking. Thank you for your time. Management has confirmed the format for WXXS Kiss 102.3 is Diverse Hot AC / Top 40 Variety. This just means their edge up on competition is that they play a much wider selection of music, particularly older Top 40 hits that no longer get airplay on most radio stations. Anyway, if you have anything to say about this topic, please leave the comment on the WXXS discussion page, not this page.

Speedy deletion of EQF

[edit]

A tag has been placed on EQF requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. <3 bunny 18:49, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your participation in this matter is noteworthy, in view of the fact that you are a member of the Wiki Project Beauty Pageants. It doesn’t matter if your vote is favorable or not, but what matters most is your involvement since it seems to me that some commenter are against pageantry. Greek question

[edit]

You are listed at WP:BABEL as someone who can provide Greek -> English translations. There is some confusion as to whether the name "Alvanoktonos" is Greek and if so, what the intended meaning may be. Is there any way you can help? Shereth 18:31, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Alvanoktonos" (Αλβανοκτόνος) means "a person who kills Albanians", "Albanians-killer", or "Albanian-slayer" in Greek. Other similar words against other ethnic groups of the Balkans exist. Sometimes politicians or military commanders may be given such nicknames, such as Basil II who is known as Boulgaroktonos (Βουλγαροκτόνος) which means "a person who kills Bulgarians", "Bulgar-killer", or "Bulgar-slayer" in Greek. See also Thomas II Preljubović, who in Wikipedia is described as Albanoktonos, although right now I do not really remember having heard his nickname before. Speedy deletion of "Newropeans"

[edit]

A page you created, Newropeans, has been tagged for deletion, as it meets one or more of the criteria for speedy deletion; specifically, it is about a company or corporation, but it does not indicate how it is important or significant, and thus why it should be included in an encyclopedia. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and the guidelines for companies in particular.

You are welcome to contribute content which complies with our content policies and any applicable inclusion guidelines. However, please do not simply re-create the page with the same content. You may also wish to read our introduction to editing and guide to writing your first article.

Thanks. BigHairRef | Talk 22:12, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Aki Paasovaara

[edit]

The article Aki Paasovaara has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done because the article seemed to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, but it did not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the notability of the subject may be deleted at any time. If you can indicate why the subject is really notable, you are free to re-create the article, making sure to cite any verifiable sources.

Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and for specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for musicians, or for companies. It's quite hard to archive a talk page like this one, because there are some more discussions from 8 August. If you look at some more sections, you'll see they have the last reply on the 8th, yet sections above have the last reply on the 9th. Current events get pretty disorganised. Grape manganese

Nerdy -- I have seen manganese data at this level[1]. Is there a way to reconcile these differences? --Paul144 (talk) 00:24, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the feedback on the manganese issue. I have researched nutrient content on several berry species, most having exceptional Mn contents, leading me to think maybe this is a common characteristic of berries. Mineral contents, however, likely derive both from the plant genetics and especially the soil and/or fertilization methods, so are difficult to nail down. It's not an area where I've been able to find much research.
Thanks also for looking over the Frank Gross article. Appreciate your comments.--Paul144 (talk) 12:33, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Palin videos

[edit]

Hi, Nerdy! Yes, DVIDS is a U.S. military site, and all works produced by the military are public domain - see Copyright status of work by the U.S. government. For example, this video was produced by Private First Class Jake Marlin. I've uploaded hundreds of photos from DVIDS at Commons, but I've never been able to figure out how to convert the video to Theora/OGG - what software do you use? Speedy deletion of Aragonese Wikipedia

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Aragonese Wikipedia requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. fr33kman (talk) 01:24, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Date formats after autoformatting

[edit]

With the recent deprecation of date autoformatting, "raw" dates are becoming increasingly visible on Wikipedia. Strong views are being expressed, and even some edit-warring here and there. A poll has been initiated to gauge community support to help us develop wording in the Manual of Style that reflects a workable consensus. As you have recently commented on date formats, your input would be helpful in getting this right. Four options have been put forward, summarised as:

  1. Use whatever format matches the variety of English used in the article
  2. For English-speaking countries, use the format used in the country, for non-English-speaking countries, use the format chosen by the first editor that added a date to the article
  3. Use International format, except for U.S.-related articles
  4. Use the format used in the country

The poll may be found here, as a table where you may indicate your level of support for each option above. --Pete (talk) 18:09, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Date format poll confirmation

[edit]

You recently contributed to a poll on date formats.[2] The option you supported won the poll but is now an option in a final poll to test support against the current version.[3] The poll gives full instructions, but briefly the choices are:

  • C = Option C, the winner of the initial poll and run-off. (US articles have US format dates, international format otherwise)
  • R = Retain existing wording. (National format for English-speaking countries, no guidance otherwise).

If you wish to participate or review the progress of this poll, you may follow this link. --Pete (talk) 02:01, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Laser Space Communications

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Laser Space Communications, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. The merge makes all kinds of sense. I would suggest that List of defecation postures instead be blanked, and you put a {{speedy|request by original author}} tag on it, since there isn't a reason for a redirect (no one would accidently go to it), then I can non-admin close the AFD. Notability of Expansys

[edit]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Expansys, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Expansys seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Expansys, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself.
