Name change

[edit]

The title uses a form of Richard's name that is little used: in fact, I've seen it nowhere else. Belmeis is the form generally used by historians, and has been for at least a century and a half. It is rendered thus by Eyton, DNB, ODNB and UK History Online (VCH and Fasti Ecclesiae alike). A few, like Lloyd, use Beaumais, which is simply the modernised version. French Wikipedia reckons Belmeis is the form attested for the village of Beaumais around 1050. I think it would be much more sensible to use this form in the title. I can see arguments for Beaumais, but none for Beaumis, which must confuse readers. The year of death is not really needed as the two identically named Bishops of London are generally distinguished by a number. I propose changing to Richard de Belmeis I and will proceed in about a week, assuming informed and argued opinion is not in the opposite direction. I suspect I created the page off the list at Bishop of London - so it's no worry to me. Ealdgyth - Talk 14:05, 7 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
