Notes

[edit]
  1. ^ Adopted for the khaki field uniform and the blue service/dress uniform in 1908, replaced in 1936–1937 by British-style ranks.
  2. ^ Created in 1913 for King Constantine I for his leadership during the Balkan Wars.
  3. ^ Rank only held by the kings of Greece.
  4. ^ In 1937, the old service uniform and rank insignia for officers, based on French and Russian models, were discarded in favour of British-inspired designs.
  5. ^ Field marshal rank was re-introduced for King George II in 1939, and borne by his successors. It was only awarded once to a career officer: Alexandros Papagos (1883–1955) in 1949. The version illustrated here is that of Paul (r. 1947–1964), with the royal cypher of his brother, George II.
  6. ^ During this period, only members of the royal family held the rank of full general (and equivalent). Only Papagos was awarded the rank among career officers (in 1947).
  8. ^ During this period, only members of the royal family held the rank of full general (and equivalent). Only Papagos was awarded the rank among career officers (in 1947).
  9. ^ Field marshal rank was used by the reigning King of Greece.
  10. ^ Field marshal rank nominally retained, actually dormant following King Constantine's flight after the 1967 countercoup.
