Le drapeau des Gambier traditionnel est blanc, coupé horizontalement par le milieu d’une bande de couleur bleu azur avec une étoile blanche au centre qui représente l’île de Crescent (Temoe) et de quatre étoiles bleues à chaque angle du fond blanc, les quatre îles : Mangareva, Taravai, Aukena et Akamaru. Il aurait été créé vers 1832 par le capitaine Mauruc avec l’autorisation du roi de Mangareva, Maputeoa, et l’approbation du vicaire apostolique Mgr Rouchouze. Le bateau qui battait alors pavillon chilien navigua sous les couleurs des Gambier. Le capitaine Mauruc qui faisait le commerce de la nacre entre les Gambier et Valparaiso pu ainsi naviguer librement.

En 2005, est apparu sur la place des archipels (devenue place Jacques Chirac) en bas de l’ex avenue Bruat (devenue Pouvanaa), à Papeete, un étonnant drapeau des Gambier avec une rayure centrale et des étoiles bleu marine dit outremer.“C’est pour ne pas le confondre avec le drapeau du parti indépendantiste qui est bleu ciel” disait alors le Président de la Polynésie française anti-indépendantiste.Drapeau des Gambier, bleu azur ou bleu outremer ?
