- ending in -vičius/-vičiūtė/-vičienė originate from Ruthenian surnames ending in patronymic suffix -vich
- ending in -vič are official Lithuanian transliterations of Polish surnames ending in -wicz, of the same Ruthenian etymology
- the suffixes -aitis/aitienė/aitytė, as well as -utis, -ytis, -ėlis, -onis, -unas are the native Lithuanian patronymic suffix. Surnames of this type may be Germanized by replacing the suffix with -eit, e.g., Adomaitis->Adomeit.
