valtionkirkko
Finnish
editEtymology
editvaltion (“of state”) + kirkko (“church”)
Pronunciation
edit- IPA(key): /ˈʋɑltionˌkirkːo/, [ˈʋɑ̝l̪t̪io̞ŋˌk̟irkːo̞]
- Rhymes: -irkːo
- Hyphenation(key): val‧tion‧kirkko
Noun
editvaltionkirkko
Usage notes
editThe Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland prefers the term kansankirkko (lit. "people's church") over valtionkirkko, as they wish to derive their role in the society rather from the hearts and minds of the people than from the powers of the state. The church, together with the Finnish Orthodox Church does enjoy some privileges due to it being recognized in the legislation on the constitutional level, but on the other hand there's a full freedom of religion.
