Proto-Samic

edit

Etymology

edit

Perhaps related to Proto-Finnic *hiici (burial ground), compare Finnish hiisi and Estonian hiis, which is perhaps inherited from Proto-Uralic *šijte ~ *šijta or borrowed from Proto-Germanic *hīdiz (den, thicket) or Proto-Germanic *sīdǭ (side). However, according to Aikio, of obscure etymology and likely a substrate loan into Proto-Samic.[1]
