editPerhaps related to Proto-Finnic *hiici (“burial ground”), compare Finnish hiisi and Estonian hiis, which is perhaps inherited from Proto-Uralic *šijte ~ *šijta or borrowed from Proto-Germanic *hīdiz (“den, thicket”) or Proto-Germanic *sīdǭ (“side”). However, according to Aikio, of obscure etymology and likely a substrate loan into Proto-Samic.[1]
