Reduplication of *գեղ- (*geł-, to sing); compare գեղօն (gełōn, song). Probably from Proto-Indo-European *gʰel- (to call, chant).[1][2] Less likely borrowed from Hittite: compare Hittite [script needed] (galgal-ināi-, to make a musical sound).
