I'm having trouble deciphering this sentence:

"Though rare in the wild, humans have always had an eye for animals of unusual colors ..."

The subordinate clause, "though rare in the wild," appears to modify "humans." However, although humans are rare in the wild, the sentiment doesn't seem to make sense here.

Yeah, I'm OK with the fix. Question: When it is pretty obvious what the fix needs to be, why whine about it here and not just fix it also? (smiles) Montanabw(talk) 18:18, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm confused

edit

Is this article about PTHA Pintos or about the general term "pinto"? They seem to be treated as one-and-the-same in this article.Countercanter (talk) 19:32, 13 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Both -- again that was an edit war compromise from way back with a PtHA person. Similar situation to the Palomino article. If we toss it altogehther, they will be back making it into a PtHA article. But there are Pintos that aren't PtHA, too, it is, after all, a set of color patterns. (sigh) Probably room to make the article sort of explain the difference. Edit wars are SOOO freaking much fun. Suggestions welcome, If we ever get Horses in warfare to FA, I'll have more time/energy to turn my attention to the color stuff and wordsmith some of these. :-P Montanabw(talk) 20:51, 14 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

The condition of being pinto, or PtHA?

edit

Which is this article about? Perhaps PtHA warrants its own article, with this article being devoted to more science-oriented discussions. Regardless, the "patterns" section was exactly the same as the one in Paint horse. While the APHA website and promo materials address the three known patterns which tend not to cross the topline (frame, splash, sabino), the PtHA does NOT. They say:

Pattern
The two color patterns are the Tobiano and the Overo.

The Tobiano coat appears to be white with large flowing spots of color, often overlapping. Spots of color typically originate from the head, chest, flank and buttock, often including the tail.

The Overo coat appears to be a colored horse with white markings. Spots of white appear to be jagged and usually originate on the animal’s side or belly spreading toward the neck, tail, legs and back. White almost never crosses the back.

Thus we do not need discussions of sabino, frame, or splash in this article unless it is decided that PtHA should have its own article. If that is the case, then we can get rid of "overo" and just say tobiano, frame, splash, sabino, etc.

My opinion is that this article is about the color, not the PtHA, though the PtHA people have periodically tried to take over the article, hence the reason it's organizationally weird. We DO need the descriptions because for example, Arabians only carry sabino but not frame or splash. For this article, I think it's fair to explain what "overo" is because so many people still use the terminology, but then explain how modern science is changing the way these things are understood (though color breed registries are slow to catch up and amend their rules accordingly!) However, we don't have to classify them the same way -- PtHA doesn't break them out the way APHA does. I'm all for making a separate article for the PtHA itself, maybe moving some stuff over there and making this article just about the color itself. Until we make a breakout article, we could move the stuff specific to PtHA to its own section. If I have time, I'll tweak it, otherwise, feel free to take a whack at it yourself. Images

edit

There seems to be a lack of quality images in the article. I added this one http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3AWestern_Pleasure_Paint_Horse_at_Fair.JPG to help. SapphireDreamPhotography (talk) 14:29, 8 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Well, that was well-intentioned, but the image is also not that useful; and it's poor -- rider's head is cut off, he is pulling on the bit so bad the horse is opening its mouth, it is a head-on shot of no particular interest. We don't just add random photos to add photos, they need to have a place in the text; for example we could perhaps have tobianos compared to frame overos or sabinos, or a piebald compared to a skewbald, that sort of thing. For example, in leopard complex, we created a chart showing the various patterns of Appaloosas and related breeds. Montanabw(talk) 21:49, 11 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ref style

Either the refs have inconsistent style or there's both inline and general WP:GENREF, hence the tag. I find being more explicit for editors helps [1] but it's up to editors of this page to decide. Widefox; talk 23:33, 21 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

It's an older article, if you want to improve the consistency, I have no objection. Montanabw(talk) 03:50, 23 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
