Visual mapping

edit

Can mapping also refer to activities like mind mapping, concept mapping, dialog mapping. Where do these fit in? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.226.207.230 (talk) 07:56, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Category theory and mapping

edit

I have to admit I'm not really sure here. I've see the term "mapping" used that way in some Category theory articles, but that's about it. So if anyone feels he or she has a better overview of the usage of the word, please be bold ... -- JanHidders — Preceding undated comment added 17:34, 18 July 2001 (UTC)Reply

The article on categories uses the word "map" rather than "mapping", by the way. "Map" is synonymous with "1-1 function" in Patrick Suppes: Introduction to Axiomatic Set Theory (1960). The Swedish National Encyclopedia (written from scratch and published 1989 - 1996) says that (the Swedish equivalents of) the three words "mapping", "function" and "transformation" are synonymous. -OJarnef

Sure, but half of all mathematicians call a map a "mapping", so this page should refer those users to that page. I've changed it. Tilgrieog 06:25, 20 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Misplaced dicussion

edit

Moved from the article, where it was inserted by anon user User:130.216.191.183[1]:

  • In Mapping between a source domain and target domain many simple mappings are not possible like width*height=area where maping from area to width and height is not possible. Now what are the conditions for a possibility of mapping?

Semiotics/Psychology

edit

I'd love to see an article on mapping in semiotics and psychology/psychoanalysis here, though I don't have the background. Anyone? MotherFunctor 20:29, 11 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cleanup

edit

I've tagged the page for cleanup as there is excessive text for a disambiguation page. Ideally, if the text is needed, it should be at target articles. — Sasuke Sarutobi (talk) 13:22, 27 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Broad-concept article template

edit

Hello @Gorthian: On June 11, 2018 you inserted the Broad-concept article template at the top of this article. There is already an article for Cartography. How would a separate article on Mapping differ from the existing Cartography article? I'm not an expert on the matter, but I'm inclined to think this article should remain a disambiguation page. Thank you. OvertAnalyzer (talk) 01:14, 20 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

@OvertAnalyzer: When I added that, my time was getting more and more crowded, and I didn’t think it through. I’ve been mostly away from editing since then, only getting back into it a little recently. And I must say, right now, I see the page totally differently. As it exists, it is not a DAB page, but a list of types of mapping. Every entry here is a partial title match, which doesn’t belong on a disambiguation page. If I were to act now, I would turn mapping into a redirect to cartography, and maybe add a hatnote to point out Mappings (poetry collection). (That is the only entry on this page that is a completely different entity; everything else is some form of matching a symbol with a real-world item.) — Gorthian (talk) 02:57, 20 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Gorthian: After giving this some thought, and poking around at various definitions and uses of the term "mapping", I understand why you originally thought a "Broad-Concept article" was needed. It is difficult though to come up with one conceptual definition of the term "mapping" that applies to all the various forms of mapping. I was wondering if this article should be turned into a list article that explains the various "mapping" concepts, followed by a list of all the different uses of the term. There are a lot more uses than are shown in the current list. It seems like every field of study has at least one or more uses for the term "mapping". What do you think about turning this into a list article? For example List of mapping disciplines. We could still redirect Mapping to Cartography, but include a hatnote that refers to the list. I started a mock-up here: User:OvertAnalyzer/Sandbox3. If you think this is a good approach, feel free to tinker with the mock-up or make suggestions. OvertAnalyzer (talk) 17:00, 23 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
