GJ 1230: A Nearby Triple System
Abstract
We present Keck HIRES and Palomar spectra of the nearby system GJ 1230. Henry et al. [AJ, 108, 1437 (1994)] classified both the A and B components as M4.5 V and noted that the B component is apparently underluminous. High resolution spectra reveal that the A component is a short-period, near equal-mass binary. This fact, together with a slightly later classification for B and the kink in the HR diagram at M4.0-4.5 V, largely resolves the mystery of the luminosity discrepancy.
