“ | Aren't you overreacting? Look at him! He's a kid, like me! Just...wired a little differently. Besides, dozens of your inventions have tried to kill us, and you always say they're "wildly misunderstood"! | ” |
–Huey |
Hubert "Huey" Duck is one of the nine protagonists of DuckTales 2017. He is the son of Della Duck and is the oldest of Donald Duck's nephews by three seconds.
Description
The oldest of the triplets by three seconds, he is often called upon to be "The Brains." He LOVES being a triplet, is the consummate Junior Woodchuck, and often finds himself scrambling to find logical solutions to the completely illogical. Ever the explorer, Huey is always eager to test his mettle and may one day earn his Adventurer's Merit Badge.
Huey is a small white-feathered preteen pekin duck with a red polo t-shirt and a red baseball cap on his head. In "Quack Pack!", he dons a light-red shirt underneath a darker red jacket with sleeves folded up to his elbow and a white and red cap with a (#😜) print.
Personality
Huey is a smart "by the book" guy, specifically the Junior Woodchuck Guidebook. He is an intelligent, analytical, and precarious boy scout. Huey is the most responsible out of the triplets, but he still can be wild with them. Huey also seems "nerdy" as he enjoys science, discovery, books, modern inventions and more. His own brother Louie has called him nerdy, yet he is proud of it in "Terror of the Terra-firmians!" and in later episodes such as "Challenge of the Senior Junior Woodchucks!"
Huey is a down to earth person and loves being a junior woodchuck. Huey is a duck of logic and rational explanation, as in "Terror of the Terra-firmians!" He chooses to believe in logic and science than mythology. He loves to find a logical solution in an illogical situation. While Huey can be considerate, he has his moments of being conceited. Huey takes great pride in his intelligence, organization skills, and his Junior Woodchucks-trained skills; which lead him to believe that he is usually right and the best in most things which show in "McMystery at McDuck McManor!", "Terror of the Terra-firmians!", and "The Infernal Internship of Mark Beaks!", and when anyone doubts his intellect he gets easily offended, as in "The Living Mummies of Toth-Ra!"
Huey is also very inquisitive with things he doesn't know too much about and yearns to know more. In "The Spear of Selene!", once he meets Zeus, he is very excited and wishes to learn more about his powers.
Huey is a brave and compassionate person, or rather, duck. He is always there to help others, especially his family. In "Storkules in Duckburg!", he and Webby help save everyone at Funso's Fun Zone from the harpies. He also shows a lot of love and appreciation for others, for example, his uncle, Donald.
Huey loves to reach his goals with well-structured checklists because he likes to be in control of the situations he finds himself in.
Although Huey is usually levelheaded, he can become unhinged when things don't go to plan, usually responding with anger or anxiety. In "The Infernal Internship of Mark Beaks!", Huey becomes emotionally unstable when passed up for an internship in favor of Dewey by Mark Beaks, lashing out and declaring himself "the Duke of Making a Mess", and in "The Impossible Summit of Mt. Neverrest!" Huey snaps at Scrooge for being too stubborn to turn around and descent Mt. Neverrest. He is anxious in "The Most Dangerous Game...Night!"
The Duke of Making a Mess is a term Huey uses to represent his repressed emotions; in particular, his anger and temper issues. This dark alter ego first appears in "The Infernal Internship of Mark Beaks!" and is mentioned in several episodes after, and is finally explained in "The Split Sword of Swanstantine!" When she uses magic to take herself and Huey into Huey's mental landscape to figure out how to defeat Steelbeak, Lena discovers a door labeled with the "Duke's" title, behind which is a feral, highly aggressive version of Huey. Huey represses the "Duke" because he doesn't like that side of himself and because he believes it gets in the way of his thinking, but after Lena encourages him not to suppress parts of who he is, Huey reaches an understanding with the "Duke" and allows himself to tap into his aggressive side in a calm, controlled manner.
However, Huey can bring himself back to being his calm and rational self to figure out the problem given to him. Intelligent, confident, brave, kind and talented, Huey will take charge in any adventure no matter how dangerous or ridiculous it gets.
On a funnier note, In "The Last Adventure!", when his plan to raid the F.O.W.L. base failed, he even yelled at Bentina Beakley for a moment to declassify the S.H.U.S.H. files.
Skills and Abilities
He possesses multiple skills and knowledge that was taught to him as both a junior woodchuck. Huey is the second most capable of the kids, second only to Webby.
- Genius-Level Intellect: Huey is an analytical thinker, which he uses with great pride to construct plans whenever there is trouble or just for fun.
- Junior Woodchuck Knowledge:
- Cartography: An expert in cartography, Huey uses techniques and arts that guide him towards the elaboration of geographical coordinates. Presented in 30 Things With Huey.
- Geology: Huey proved to know at some point the origin, history, life and structure of the Earth in "Terror of the Terra-firmians!"
- Skills with Ties:
- Camping:
- Trap Builder:
- Sewing work:He is very good at sewing and was very upset when he slipped a stitch on his Senior Junior Woodchuck uniform.
- Robotics: According to Taurus Bulba in Let's Get Dangerous!, Huey was the Junior Woodchucks robotics champion for four years running.
- Coding Languages: In "Beaks in the Shell!", Huey displays his knowledge of Morse code by successfully decoding Fenton's cry for help.
- Junior Woodchuck Knowledge:
- Pattern Recognition: He is able to recognize patterns as depicted in The Most Dangerous Game...Night! and New Gods on the Block! (but he was unsuccessful in doing so in the family's mission to retrieve the helmet of Henghis Kahn)
- Voice Modulation: Huey knows how to change his voice as in issue #1 of the DuckTales (2017) comics, when he imitated his brothers voice to distract Donald, and "The Split Sword of Swanstantine!", when he tried different simulations to handle Steelbeak.
- Musical Intuition: It is revealed throughout the series that Huey is musically talented/gifted in general.
- Various Instruments: While helping Dewey and Louie with their search to inadvertently learn more about their mother (Della Duck) in "The Secret(s) of Castle McDuck!", he plays three notes (B-natural, A-natural, and G-natural) on a single harp string. Huey also admits that he participated in the Junior Woodchuck Philharmonic Orchestra at some point.
- Singing: In "The Dangerous Chemistry of Gandra Dee!", Huey has a beautiful voice while singing part of an opera as a distraction, allowing Webby to uncover who Gandra really is.
- Unison Voice: Ability to speak at the same time. The triplets do this - albeit unintentionally - in "The Beagle Birthday Massacre!"
- Lock-Picking: He is able pick a lock with anything, as in the comic issue #1.
- Necronomicon Book: Huey is a connoisseur of several books and in numerous natural and supernatural including The Necronomicon.
- Combat:" While Huey doesn't use it often, he does have considerable strength and agility as seen in multiple episodes, some against his brothers, and in other episodes it against enemies.
- Agility:" Huey has great speed and flexibility against foes.
- Fourth Wall Awareness: In "Quack Pack!", Huey is the first to realize that he and his family are in a TV show, starting with when he notices his Guidebook is empty. It then progresses with him hearing the audience laughing and background music, noticing the lights fading, seeing a commercial for Pep, realizing his book is just a prop, that the walls of the study room have no pipes, cables, or insulation, and ultimately, he convinces Scrooge, Louie, and Della to look at the fourth wall, seeing the audience. He also complains about being in a transition scene.
- Vivid Imagination: Though denying it in "A Nightmare on Killmotor Hill!", Huey proves that he has quite the imagination in "Challenge of the Senior Junior Woodchucks!" when he hallucinated a talking Junior Woodchuck Guidebook serving as his conscience throughout the latter half of the episode. Another example is during "Beaks in the Shell!" when he spreads virtual hearts out of pure joy over Fenton and Gandra's romantic relationship, and later on designing his custom superhero armor inside the Gizmocloud.
